— Black unemployment rate was 12.4 percent (twice as high as white people)

— Only about 4 percent of Black people had a college degree.

I don’t have to explain the indignities and the violence that Black Americans suffered under Jim Crow.

He is saying that affirmative action was worse than that.

It’s #BlackHistoryMonth and I have to ask:

Are people including enslaved Africans, descendants of those enslaved, and Black people whose unjust, low-wage labor sustained the economy in the 1800s/1900s as immigrants when they say “immigrants built this country”?

Because chattel slavery was for the express purpose of building empire.

But our ancestors weren’t folks who came here seeking a better life.

They arrived in chains, were bred like cattle, and severely violated, sexually and otherwise. Their trauma shouldn’t be diminished or forgotten, even in efforts toward freedom from ICE’s inhumane, violent tactics.

We can only get to justice for all when truth is taught, embraced, and spoken.

Dinesh D’Souza has long been one of the most horrible people in the conservative movement, but the greatest issue I have is that he sits there and bemoans bigotry against Indians and acts shocked by where it came from.

He sits there and pretends to be a friend to Jews because he donates money to some project in Israel.

And then he comes on a week later and posts a video that contains physiognomic racism.

You can’t have physiognomic racism for one group and then hope it doesn’t get projected onto another.

It doesn’t get siloed to one group (not that that would be okay) — it spreads like a virus.

Indians and Jews constantly have to deal with this very specific type of bigotry.

You are an absolute disgrace, Dinesh.

In 1963, the famous photographer Richard Avedon took a picture of a man named William Casby. William Casby, born in 1857, was 106 years old at the time. In his hands, he was holding his great-great-granddaughter, Cherri Stamps-McCray.

The image amazes me because the elderly gentleman holding his descendant so tenderly, was born into slavery more than a century prior. Casby would eventually live until 1970, dying at the age of 113.

His great- and great-grandchildren are alive today, and many of them remember him.

It puts into perspective just how relatively recent slavery existed. Because as faraway and distant as it may feel now. Even in modern-day America, there are people who have active memories of talking to former slaves.

In 1811, Charles Deslondes led the largest uprising of over 500 African people speaking at least 50 different languages.
