And he says an employment component for older kids may be something districts could consider. Apprenticeships to help with job skills and paying jobs that can provide teens with financial support for families that are struggling.
Says he hopes summer programs will include educational enrichment to help what they may be behind on, and will include music and art, as well as academic support for students who are struggling. And a strong recreational component.
Says summer and afterschool programs are going to receive a tripling of federal funding over the next 3 years, which means $71 million dollars for Vermont programs ABOVE normal funding. Says he wants Vt to spend it in "imaginative and creative" ways.
Sanders says the federal package also addresses the needs of kids, from the youngest to those young adults who are in college. And he homes in on afterschool care, which continues to be a challenge for so many working families.
