Home Affairs Minister Reveals New Electronic Travel Authorisation System Has Already Rejected More Than 6,100 Fraudulent Applications From Foreigners Wanting to Come to South Africa

South Africa has launched its new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system, with Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber revealing that 6,126 fraudulent applications have already been rejected. President Cyril Ramaphosa officially launched the digital immigration system at OR Tambo International Airport on Wednesday, marking a major reform of the country’s visa and immigration processes.

The ETA has processed 216,204 applications since its pilot began during South Africa’s G20 presidency for travellers from China, India, Indonesia and Mexico. Applicants apply online, verify their cellphone number and email, scan their passports and upload a selfie, while biometric technology checks their identity and passports against more than 40 parameters before automated risk analysis is conducted.

Schreiber said successful applicants could receive their ETA within 24 hours and store it in a digital wallet on their smartphones. At South African airports, travellers will undergo facial verification, while the upgraded EMCS 2.0 system will help determine whether travellers are authorised to enter. The system will also help Home Affairs identify overstayers in real time.

The ETA is initially available at OR Tambo, Cape Town, King Shaka and Lanseria international airports, with expansion to land and sea ports planned. Border Management Authority Commissioner Michael Masiapato said the system would help process legitimate travellers while assisting authorities in identifying fugitives and tackling irregular migration. Home Affairs plans to progressively expand the ETA to additional visa categories and make it compulsory for certain short-stay visitors.
