Still thinking about RFKs justification for why the “spike in autism” is true and novel and not the result of better testing and general acceptance. “I’m 70 years old and growing up we never saw kids like that” ………. also Dr. Oz was on the podium
In a packed bar and I’m watching a table of boomers take 5+ mins per person to order some food while reading the menu… holy shit the patience of this bartender is biblical…
The (huge) box he’s referring to is being xeno and racist and sexist and going about it with dunk-on-you attitude lmao I can’t believe people are trying to repaint this dude as moderate and civil. He fit right in with the talk show radio hosts of the 90s. We’re not going back man
I don’t have anything interesting to say about it, but I do think it’s worth paying attention to the way in which the Right has been stuffed into the smallest imaginable box where, like, I guess you’re allowed to think that taxes should be lower, but basically that’s like it. There’s no room for disagreement on race or gender or sexuality or tradition or big society defining-laws like the civil rights act or the ACA or COVID or really anything of consequence at all.
I’m a bit surprised by the number of seemingly sensible people that fell for the ‘change my mind’ pretense of campus political debates and imagine these events as some kind of good-faith forum for engaging with different political views
There is a very big difference between a Public Figure and the wannabe che’s on twitter. For instance, people actually give a shit when a Public Figure gets shot! It’s their job to enforce decorum. And it’s everyone else’s job to say “yea but also, fuck that guy”
Been loathe to just pluck random comments as representative. Democrats have denounced the killing, expressed shock, as have most on the left. That there is a consensus that runs from hasan and jacobin to schumer and jeffreys speaks to what the actual broad view is of the "left." And that hasn’t stopped some elected Republicans from blaming half the country for the killing.
But this kind of comment (not this one specifically) is more than just an isolated or rare response - it does represent a strain of thinking on the left, what jacobin calls "a competitive lack of empathy" that is real and not worth pretending otherwise. No one is bullying anyone into mourning. Not trying to make you "feel" anything, or shame anyone. It's not about decorum or respect or performative grieving. And it's not about defending Charlie Kirk's worldview even a little bit.
But I do want to persuade anyone who hated Charlie Kirk's politics to care that he is dead, to be stricken by it, if not because it's a moral horror, than because of where it may lead. That is especially important when leaders on the right are using this killing as a pretext for a crackdown.
But also, we live in a depraved era. It's difficult not to let it harden us, whatever the justification. Fighting that impulse is worthwhile not for the sake of "civility" or "norms" but out of love for ourselves. Not feeling isn't victory, it's defeat.
The fact that so many people online instantly assumed that Israel must have killed Charlie Kirk, which doesn't even make any sense, is just Israel Derangement Syndrome. I'm all for rational critique of Israel and US foreign policy, but this is just paranoid knee-jerk derangement
Hilarious reading supporters’ replies to people shit talking him. They’re like YES he was a racist, but he was NOT a nazi. As am I. And you should respect that
I’ll tell you what’s wrong with this country. We resort to killing each other when instead someone at some point should’ve just beat the shit out of him. Honestly baffled how that never happened
NYT’s Lulu Garcia-Navarro:
So, you have equated anti-Zionism with antisemitism.
ADL’s Jonathan Greenblatt:
It is.
Lulu Garcia-Navarro:
One of the things I heard from people is that anti-Zionism for them is a desire to have the rights of Palestinians be equal to the rights of Jews in Israel and the Palestinian territories. Is that definition of anti-Zionism to you antisemitic?
Jonathan Greenblatt:
Well, look... if you believe my definition of Zionism — which is really not my definition, it’s widely accepted — it’s peculiar to me how anti-Zionism isn’t the opposite of that. How people choose to interpret it, to embellish it, to sort of dress it up as something other than what it is. But the reality is if you believe how I laid out Zionism, then anti-Zionism is pretty simple.
Lulu Garcia-Navarro:
I think the challenge is if someone defines their view of anti-Zionism in a way that allows for Jews to exist in a state of Israel but that grants Palestinians rights — but you’re seeing that as antisemitic.
That this man and men like him have a grip on conspiracy-theory levels of power should be an indictment of all our major power structures and monetary systems. “The antichrist is stagnation” give me a fucking break. At least he seems to be losing the war against his nihilism.
A fucking embarrassment of an organization. Where was this shit when the richest man in the world threw up a SIEG HEIL at the goddamn INAUGURATION. Reflects the shame Israel has brought on all Jews. I’m barely practicing anymore yet I swear to god I will never let this go
1/ Zohran Mamdani's apparent win in the NYC mayoral Democratic primary is being celebrated by some with hateful antisemitic tropes and extreme anti-Israel rhetoric.🧵
enjoying the succulent american delicacy of not fixing cosmetic damage to my car from an accident that wasn't my fault because my insurance rates will go up
everyone stay on high alert for non-sanctioned compassion. do your part by reporting any instances of non-sanctioned compassion to your nearest school board. compassion will destroy our way of life and must be eradicated at all costs.
