At the Food Loss and Food Waste Webinar, Ms. @kirabo_fai highlighted the critical role of youth-led innovation in turning Africa’s food loss commitments into practical action.

She challenged participants to imagine a future where every kitchen can actually see and understand the food it wastes. Her message was clear: achieving the Kampala Declaration target of halving post-harvest loss and waste by 2035 will require more than policy commitments, it will require accurate data and simple tools that work where food is prepared and served.

She presented PlateCheck, an AI-powered solution designed for African commercial kitchens. The tool helps restaurants, hotels and school canteens capture food waste, identify what is being thrown away, estimate its weight and calculate the financial value lost.

Her key message was that food waste often remains invisible until it is measured. By turning everyday waste into useful data, PlateCheck can help kitchens buy smarter, protect profits and prevent avoidable losses before they happen.
