An antifascist group within the supporters of Club Deportivo Guadalajara in the city of Guadalajara, Mexico, Brigada 97.
Brigada 97 emerged in June 2013 following the decision by the Club Deportivo Guadalajara management to disband various supporter groups. Some Chivas supporters who had previously been part of different supporter groups came together and decided to form an openly antifascist terrace group. While only four people attended the first meeting, around 20 people came together at the second meeting. From the beginning, the group’s aim was to struggle both in the terraces and outside the terraces.
The name 97 refers to the 10th league championship won by Chivas in 1997. For most of the group’s founding members, this championship was the first one they witnessed in the stands.
Brigada 97 makes its antifascist identity visible in the terraces through Palestinian flags, Zapatista symbols and different left-wing symbols. In addition to solidarity with Palestine, the group also stands in solidarity with the teachers’ movement in Mexico, workers’ struggles, the 43 students disappeared in Ayotzinapa and various social struggles.
