ACCOUNTANT ARRESTED IN SH16 MILLION SACCO FRAUD

An accountant has been apprehended for masterminding a fraudulent scheme that led to a sacco lose over Sh16 million, thanks to meticulous investigations by detectives from the Banking Fraud Investigation Unit (BFIU).

The suspect, Amos Fikiri Ruwa, a former accountant of the Sacco, allegedly authorised cheque transactions using members' accounts, collaborating with external accomplices to perpetrate the scheme.

As a result of these fraudulent activities, the Sacco lost Sh6,852,166 initially, followed by additional fraudulent transactions amounting to Sh9,161,000, culminating in a total loss of Sh16,013,166.

Investigators discovered that Ruwa conspired with Mohamed Abdulrahman, a businessman and director of a construction company whose fraudulent cheques were cashed, diverting the Sacco’s funds into various unsuspecting members' accounts.

A total of 58 cheques were fraudulently issued, cleared, and deposited into accounts belonging to Abdulrahman and other unsuspecting members.

Forensic analysis revealed that forged withdrawal slips were linked to Ruwa, enabling him to siphon off portions of the funds. These cheques were never recorded in the cheque ledger, indicating a deliberate attempt to conceal the fraudulent activities.

On January 17, 2026, the first suspect, Mohamed Abdulrahman, was arrested and subsequently presented before court.

Yesterday, February 14, 2026, Amos Fikiri Ruwa was also arrested and is in custody undergoing processing, pending his arraignment.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), through its Banking Fraud Investigation Unit, remains resolute in its commitment to combating fraud within financial institutions through comprehensive intelligence-led investigations to ensure that all individuals involved in such deceptive acts are held fully accountable for their actions.

The aspiration is commendable, but the comparison is incomplete and risks misleading conclusions.

China’s poverty reduction was not accidental nor rhetorical. It was driven by very specific structural conditions that Kenya currently does not have: a massive industrial base, export-led manufacturing, long-term state planning insulated from electoral cycles, heavy public investment in infrastructure, land reforms, and disciplined fiscal policy over decades.

China did not reduce poverty by setting numerical targets alone. It:

Built factories at scale

Absorbed rural labour into manufacturing

Coordinated state, capital and labour under a coherent industrial policy

Kenya, by contrast, is de-industrialising, over-taxing consumption, exporting raw labour instead of value-added goods, and running a debt-constrained economy with weak social protection systems.

VEHICLE USED IN SNIPER'S HOMICIDE RECOVERED AT KITHOKA, MERU

The DCI Homicide detectives yesterday recovered the vehicle that was used to abduct the late Daniel Muthiani Benard alias Sniper and later dispose his body at Mutonga River in Chiakariga area of Tharaka Nithi on December 2, 2023.

The identification and subsequent recovery of the vehicle, a silver Toyota Premio registration number KCR 742N followed thorough forensic analysis of crucial leads, which pointed to a residential place at Canopy area of Kithoka, Meru county.

In the latest establishments, the investigating team has identified Vincent Mureithi Kirimi alias Supuu as the driver who hired the vehicle on the date of abduction and gruesome murder of Sniper, ferrying other three occupants including Brian Mwenda, Christus Manyara Kiambi and Boniface Kithinji Njihia alias DJ Kaboom.

Further investigations are ongoing with the Homicide team working expeditiously on the case.
