Every leaf and every reflection was put there by hand, in oil, by the Danish painter Peder Mørk Mønsted in 1894.

It is called Wooded path by a river, and it captures the hardest thing there is to paint: a forest in full sunlight. Light through trees never falls evenly. It scatters into countless flecks of brightness and shadow, a glow on one leaf, darkness on the next, a glint on the water that would vanish the moment a cloud passed. Get those even slightly wrong, and the whole thing collapses into a green blur.

Mønsted got every one of them right, and in doing so he captured something anyone who has stood alone in a wood will recognize immediately: that hush that falls over you, the sense of being completely at peace, and the feeling that the whole world has paused to breathe…

Una delle cose che si impara da piccoli sul bullismo è che mostrarsi completamente passivi o intimiditi incoraggia chi aggredisce a continuare a farlo. A leggere e sentire certe persone parlare di Ucraina e Putin, sembra invece che applichino una logica totalmente opposta.

Minacciata dalla guerra ibrida russa e dalla deriva oligarchica americana, l’Europa può trasformare la propria lentezza e frammentazione in una forza: la difesa del metodo democratico. L’apertura a un’alleanza strutturale con il Canada indica una possibile strada, fondata non sull’egemonia, ma sulla capacità di proteggere libertà, pluralismo e separazione dei poteri.

☕️ Here's a question to ponder over your morning coffee. What would have happened if America had simply not spent the last couple of years behaving like a drunk uncle at a wedding, insulting the bride, the groom, the vicar and the man who parked the cars?

The answer is nothing. Nothing at all would have happened to the rest of the world. Life inside America, on the other hand, would have been a great deal more pleasant, because every single problem the country is currently wrestling with was made in America, by Americans, on purpose, and then explained to the public with a lie.

There was no trade deficit emergency. None. So there was no need for tariffs, which means there was no need for the inflation, the diesel and petrol prices heading for the moon, the farmers queuing for bailouts or the bond market clearing its throat every time the president opens his mouth.

Nobody was ripping America off, so there was no need to insult the Canadians until they took their billions and went home, and started filling in the paperwork to become an associate member of the European Union, which is a sentence nobody expected to write in their lifetime. No need to gift-wrap the soybean market and post it to Brazil, and no need to make the average European feel he is doing something noble by putting the bourbon back on the shelf and buying a Mercedes instead.

Iran would have carried on being Iran, which is to say tedious and unchanged. America would still have its bases scattered across the globe with grateful hosts rather than muttering ones, and the allies would still be buying American missiles rather than build their own. Foreign students would still be paying eye-watering sums to attend American universities, tourists would still be queuing in the Florida sun, and the dollar would still be trusted without anyone having to ask an awkward question.

And here is the truly maddening part. Trump would have been more popular than Putin. He would have been sitting on a booming economy, cheap fuel and a world that still picked up the phone, facing a Democratic party so invisible it could have been declared missing, and the midterms would have been a coronation rather than a coin toss.

In other words, the car was running beautifully. And then somebody climbed in, announced that the engine was on fire, and set light to it to prove the point.

Domani mattina spariscono dagli ospedali, dalle RSA e dalle case di riposo tutti i lavoratori stranieri.
Medici. Infermieri. OSS. Badanti.
Chi copre i turni?
Chi assiste i nostri anziani?
Chi entra in reparto alle 6 di mattina?
Chi fa le notti?
Chi si occupa di una persona non autosufficiente quando i figli devono lavorare?
Qualche numero.

Sono 45.433 gli infermieri nati all'estero iscritti all'Albo nazionale FNOPI al 30 settembre 2025.
Per i medici, una stima pubblicata da FNOMCeO indica circa 19.000 medici di origine straniera in Italia.
E poi c'è il gigantesco esercito invisibile della cura domestica.
Tra chi lavora nelle famiglie — soprattutto badanti e collaboratori domestici — il 64,3% è straniero.

Quindi la domanda è semplice:
SE DOMANI LI MANDASSIMO TUTTI A CASA, CHI LI SOSTITUIREBBE?
Perché puoi fare tutti gli slogan che vuoi.
Puoi dire “prima gli italiani”.
Puoi dire “basta immigrati”.
Puoi promettere rimpatri.
Ma quando arriva la notte e tua madre ha bisogno di assistenza…
chi le cambia il pannolone?
Quando il reparto è sotto organico…
chi fa il turno?
Quando l'ospedale cerca infermieri e non ne trova abbastanza…
chi entra in corsia?
La realtà è molto meno ideologica degli slogan.
UNA PARTE DELLA NOSTRA SANITÀ E DEL NOSTRO SISTEMA DI CURA È GIÀ TENUTA IN PIEDI ANCHE DA PERSONE ARRIVATE DA ALTRI PAESI.
E non sono “ospiti”.
Sono lavoratori.
Pagano affitti, tasse e contributi.
Fanno turni.
Assistono i nostri genitori.
Curano i nostri malati.
Possiamo discutere di immigrazione.
Possiamo discutere di regole, ingressi, cittadinanza e integrazione.
Ma almeno facciamolo guardando in faccia la realtà.
Perché prima di mandare qualcuno a casa, sarebbe interessante sapere chi è disposto a fare il suo lavoro domani mattina.

VOYAGER 1 JUST CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

Something thought to be broken for more than 20 years has suddenly come back to life on a spacecraft more than 15 billion miles from Earth.

NASA’s Voyager 1, launched in 1977, recently faced another problem that could have threatened its ability to communicate with us. Engineers needed backup roll thrusters to help keep the spacecraft’s antenna precisely aimed at Earth. But those thrusters had been considered unusable since 2004 after their tiny heaters stopped receiving power.

Then NASA engineers took another look at the old failure. They suspected the heaters might not actually be dead, but stuck in the wrong electrical state.

So they sent a carefully planned command into deep space.

The signal took more than 23 hours to reach Voyager 1. There was no instant response and no way to intervene if the spacecraft reacted badly. Engineers had to wait.

Then, more than a day later, the telemetry arrived.

The temperature had risen.

The heaters were working.

A system believed to be lost for two decades had been brought back to life from billions of miles away.

The timing matters. Voyager’s working thrusters are slowly becoming less reliable as fuel residue builds up inside their narrow tubes. Meanwhile, the spacecraft’s nuclear power source loses about four watts every year. NASA has already been forced to shut down instruments to conserve its shrinking supply of electricity. Only two science instruments remain operating.

And Voyager 1 is still heading farther into interstellar space.

In November 2026, it is expected to become the first human-made object to reach a distance of one light-day from Earth — about 16.1 billion miles away.

A spacecraft built nearly half a century ago is still whispering information back to Earth from the darkness between the stars.

And somehow, every time it seems ready to fall silent, engineers find another way to keep it talking.
