When African nations gained independence (mostly in the 1950s–70s), they inherited broken systems: weak institutions, unstable borders, and economies that had been designed for export, not self-sufficiency.

2. Political Instability and Corruption

While there are corrupt leaders in every part of the world (including the West), in Africa this corruption often has more devastating consequences, because the systems in place are more fragile and external actors often exploit that weakness.

3. Unfair Global Economic Systems

African economies are often locked into unequal relationships with the rest of the world.
This makes it hard for African countries to build self-reliant economies and meet the basic needs of their populations sustainably.
