I wanted to be a writer when I worked as a tutor. I wanted to be a writer when I was working construction. I wanted to be a writer when I worked in insurance and as a teacher and grading essays for Pearson and as a translator for a lawyer and at every other gig. Keep writing.
Remember: It’s okay to buy more books. It’s okay to get more books from the library. It’s okay to buy books you won’t read for years. It’s okay to pile books everywhere. It’s okay to get different editions of the same book. Books are awesome. Do whatever makes you happy.
I promise you—reading horror fiction with complex, vile, yes even “problematic” characters will not impact the integrity of your moral character. Not every character in a *FICTIONAL* book needs to reflect your ethics and values. I will die on this hill because I know I’m right.
