NO DMs please..not interested..
Ageing curmudgeon, I'm just me, take me as you find me.. I rarely take offence..me= MALE..for those wonder about the Kit bit...
@Nenaghman Kinda contradictory... we havent enough military to defend ourselves but "they" would want to deploy this meager force to some foreign battlefields..why?
@computer_user3@ConorHogarty What value is neutrality if EU is invaded? Do you think we can wave the "nothing to do with us, we're Irish" flag and watch from the sidelines??
Ireland, like all other so called neutral states, are self declared. They are not formally recognised by anybody, but out of respect the others say " yea, ok, if thats what you want, fine by us"
But maybe the silent bit left unsaid might be paraphrased as " yer on yer own mate, don't call on us if things go awry"...
And we need to ponder that... on our own ..
@Paul_J_Roche@griptmedia Too complicated for me... all I want is for Ireland, through the Oireachtas, to be free to make its own decisions on how best to defend Ireland, be it alone or, more practically, in cooperation with like-minded neighbour states..
DPP office decided that there was not a case to answer and instructed the court accordingly..
But we all know better...
notwithstanding the fact that over two thirds of sex offence cases never make it to court
He was neither convicted nor acquitted. The decision centred around the question "was it a crime as charged".. and, apparently, it wasn't?
@davecoughlan80@OzzyJellyEllie This wasn't an "in camera" case... it just never got to a point where it was a court case at all...
It was removed from the lists before it ever got to the judge .
What matters now is the fact that they are finally beginning to unpick the triple lock
It was thrust upon them as a probably unwelcome price to pay in the situation that then prevailed. And the need to dissolve it is probably thrust upon them by EU defence imperatives that now prevail..
@Paul_J_Roche@griptmedia The Government seem to be simply trying to extricate Ireland from a situation that gives Presidents Trump and Putin far more say in Irish affairs than our own president could only dream of..
@Paul_J_Roche@griptmedia She is constitutionally debarred from submitting a referendum..
I was hoping those who seem to have given the matter a lot of thought might actually be able to say what it is they want??
@YanMacNP@NationalPartyIE Was he guilty as charged?
Over the last 10 years, nearly 20,000 sex offence files were sent to the DPP .. over 13,000 were dropped without file...
@karenievers He can now go into the records along with over 13,000 others whose files were dropped without trial by the DPP over the last decade. 67% of all cases are deemed to be unsound for prosecution..
@RealNewsPhilly Maybe simply lack of crediblr evidence to proceed with the trial. 67% of all sex crimes (over 19,000 in total) investigated over the last decade were dropped without going to trial...
@PQuinlanDW The DPP never explains. Not in this case nor any one of the 13,000 sexual crime cases dropped over the last decade, 67% of total investigations.
It could be that the evidence simply did not stand up to scrutiny when fully examined in a calmer manner.
@OzzyJellyEllie If the prosecution felt that the evidence could have sustained a trial with a prospect of success, it is unlikely that the DPP would have pulled the rug from under them
Just because we wanted this guy to be guilty as charged, it doesn't mean he was..
@IrishmanIRL Of the 19,000 sex crime files investigated over the last decade, less than one third made it to trial, and of rape cases that made it to trial, around half were convicted.
@justindslamen Fair trial is probably important too..
Beyond a reasonable doubt is a well established yearstick
gearstick
This case fell at the first hurdle, no charge to answer..
