Jesus Christ is both Creator and creation. The Creed tells us He was “not made,” and yet “made man.” He is both the image of the invisible God and the firstborn of ALL creation (Col. 1:15). As the archetype of all creation, the Logos is the representative source material from which all things come into being and are held together. Jesus is the beginning (arche/ἀρχή “source”) of the created order itself (Rev. 3:14). Creation finds its true origin not in Adam, but in the crucified and resurrected Last Adam who, though coming later in time, actually precedes the first man as the timeless and now fully created Man. When Pontius Pilate says “Ecce homo (behold the Man),” we see true humanity for the first time … for we finally see it as divine humanity. True man and true God are finally imaged correctly: for they are seen as cruciform - as self-emptying love, and therefore the human image is aligned as God’s own. In His Passion we see Creator and creation neither living in-turned for themselves, but both God and man have ecstatically lost themselves in one another even unto death in the single Person of the incarnate Jesus Christ.
