You know what fascinates me about old movies?

Not the ones that were ignored when they came out and eventually became cult classics.

The really interesting ones are the movies that were huge and then somehow just disappeared from the conversation.

SISTER ACT (1992) is one of those movies.

This wasn’t some little comedy that people slowly discovered on cable. It made over $139 million domestically and was the third highest grossing movie of 1992, ahead of HOME ALONE 2, WAYNE’S WORLD and UNFORGIVEN.

And yet if you asked people to name the defining movies of 1992, SISTER ACT probably wouldn’t be anywhere near the first titles that come up.

THREE MEN AND A BABY (1987) is even crazier.

Leonard Nimoy, fucking Spock, directed a comedy about three bachelors suddenly having to look after a baby. It made $167.8 million against an $11 million budget and finished as the highest grossing domestic release of 1987.

The highest grossing movie in America that year was directed by Spock.

I love looking at old box office charts for this reason. They are basically little snapshots of what millions of people were actually excited to see at the time, and sometimes the results look completely bizarre from the perspective of 2026.

Some movies become part of the canon.

Some become cult classics.

And some were once absolutely fucking enormous before quietly becoming movies your parents remember and nobody talks about anymore.

Those are the ones I want to rediscover.
