Sigh. I am only adding my two cents because this has been all over my timeline, and frankly, there is so much to say.
Fandoms are great until they aren’t. There comes a point where you need to step back and accept that fan theories and headcanons do not dictate actual canon. And that is perfectly fine; no one is telling you to stop enjoying your own interpretations. What we are asking is for you to stop pestering the author.
Repeat after me: harassing a creator will never make them think, "Oh, let me go back and change the story or write an alternative version just for this group of people who are treating me like garbage."
Financially supporting a work does not entitle you to harass its creator. Disappointment doesn't justify cruelty. You can easily voice your frustration without dragging the person who shared their art with you. Besides, no one forced you to keep reading. The moment you saw the story was going in a completely different direction, you could have dropped it. If you decided to keep going just because some rando using big words convinced you the fan theories were right welp, that is entirely on YOU.
I understand the frustration. I have been disappointed by narratives with wasted potential before: I get it. But you will never see me attack an author because my personal theories didn't pan out. This is exactly why I don't love theory culture; it creates this toxic space where fans think that if their predictions or interpretations are wrong, the author is automatically a bad writer.
Fandoms become unbearable because of people who cannot accept the canon and simply move on. Your fanon would be entirely harmless if it weren’t paired with a constant need to bash the author for their own creative choices.
Yes, this is about Wet Sand.
Yes, I still believe it deserved a much better fandom.
