🩺 Systematic review: 13 studies (157 932 patients) examined ICU vs ward/intermediate care after vascular surgery
🔍 ICU admission was linked to higher mortality, more complications (kidney injury, bleeding, readmission, respiratory failure, infection), and greater hospital costs, with no clear clinical benefit
⚖️ Authors suggest residual confounding and insufficient risk stratification may explain these findings—highlighting the need for smarter ICU resource use

Elective infrarenal AAA repairs in the UK 2014-21 were studied (n=26 916): 22% were active, 62% former, and 16% never smokers. Many serious complications were more common among active smokers, yet there was a 2.4 fold variation in the proportion of active smokers between hospitals. Smoking cessation programs can save lives.
