Maori had at most a few thousand words (some linguists estimate as few as 700) before Europeans arrived in New Zealand. The earliest Maori dictionary, compiled by missionary William Williams in 1844, had 5,000 words. It was also largely indistinguishable from other Eastern Polynesian languages - 70–90%+ similar in basic word comparisons according to Pollex (Polynesian Lexicon Project Online). Maori dictionaries now have about 15-20k words, most which have been invented by academics or are simply transliterations of English. So Maori isn't so much a bastardised language as a recently invented one.
IRONY ALERT 🚨
Green MP Tamatha Paul stood up in Parliament this week and torched English as a "bastard language" - a "bastardisation" not even worthy of official status in her own words.
She delivered that entire spray... in English.
The language she just trashed was the exact language she used to trash it.
Here's the reality Tamatha won't say out loud: English is the language New Zealanders use to run businesses, raise families, pay bills, and yes - debate laws in the House she sits in.
It deserves the same legal recognition as te reo Māori and NZ Sign Language. That's not an attack on anyone's culture. That's just acknowledging what's already true.
Hobson's Pledge says make it official. One law, one standard, equal recognition for the language virtually every New Zealander actually speaks.
Do you think English should be an official language of NZ? 🇳🇿

Once again, @MelanieLatest casts the light of truth on the highly biased accounts and outright lies about Israel in the mainstream media. I would ask the question, why shouldn't Jews live in their ancient homeland of Judea and Samaria (the so-called West Bank)? After all, two million Arabs live in Israel as citizens with full rights. Why can't Arabs accept Jews in their territories and countries?
Well, it looks like the Post is now the official newspaper for Hamas’ local branch, Minto’s Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa.
Stuff, the Post’s owner, made a big performance about how it would have boycotted the Media awards formerly known as the Voyagers, after the Voyager’s owner posted an extract from Mein Kampf, had the sponsor not been dropped, because it was “irreconcilable” with industry values and standards.
But apparently those values and standards don’t extend to refusing money to print Hamas propaganda and foment hatred and intimidation.
I think even left wing economists know in the small, rational part of their brain that free market policies are bound to reinvigorate even the most moribund economies, improving the lives of even the most unfortunate in any country. The problem is, the big, irrational part of their brain won’t let them admit it.
I would support amalgamation if it was legislated that the amalgamated council had to operate on 5% less rates revenue each year for the next 10 years (with no additional borrowing).
Would be good if the mayors released their tame consultant's report (same ones recently produced estimates of $7m-$2bn for the costs of another change), incl whether the claimed benefits have been discounted at a reasonable rate or at the pretend 2% real rate now favoured by Tsy.
With respect to Eric, I don't think he understands where the value lies. You don't get access to "frontier models" (presumably he's referring to AI/LLMs) by having data centres that host them in your country. Data centres are like aluminium smelters - you're effectively exporting energy. NZ does need to remove barriers to investment in this type of infrastructure, but the Government shouldn't be trying to pick winners on the technology front, but encouraging all overseas investment in high-value-add industries.
Ireland and Spain are the two largest Israel-hating countries in Europe. Here is what Douglas Murray said about Ireland:
As for the Irish obsession with Israel . . , I want to hear Ireland talk about Israel probably Last among all things in this life. Ireland, Never forget, decided that in the 20th century, that in the war against Nazi fascism it should be neutral and it forbade its ports even being used by the Royal Navy in its fight against Adolf Hitler, and many thousands of British servicemen went to the bottom of the ocean because of the Irish people and Irish governments obscene love of Adolf Hitler.
I will not hear in the 21st century, the descendants of Hitler-Lovers in Ireland telling me about the Jewish state’s right to exist. I would rather hear Hamas sing than hear Irish politicians talking about Jews. They have no damn right. They've done nothing in their history that gives them the right to tell the Jewish people what they should do in their historic homeland.
🛑 Some one is having a laugh 🤣🤣.
There are just far too many NZ 🇳🇿 MPs for the population of 5.36 million.
NZ has 123 MPs and most are there to clip the tax funded ticket plus collecting perks without adding any productive value to NZ it is just embarrassing to watch.
I have just attended the Israeli Knesset who have 120 KM's (MP's) for a population of 10 million in a far more complex environment.
NZs bloated system needs addressing & is draining financial resources that be
redirected into more productive outcomes.

Christchurch developer Matthew Horncastle says he’ll comply with election billboard disclosure rules while mocking the requirements, arguing they unnecessarily restrict free political expression.

Here's an idea for our politicians. How about working on legislation that benefits the country economically rather than being fucking karens wanting to control people
Agreed. This is a Seymour pick. His arbitrary and undemocratic decisions, often overriding candidate choices by regional party selection committees, are what led me to withdraw support for the party.
Some people on here have speculated that Argentina’s win over England will give them confidence to invade the Falklands again. Aside from the fact that it has been obvious for years that the British couldn’t now defend Fastnet Rock let alone the Falklands, Britain’s precipitous decline and the increasing prosperity of Argentina under Milei means if the latter wait a few more years, the Falkland Islanders will be begging Argentina to take them.
In the past I would have backed England against Argentina, but there is something very satisfying about the most based country in the world defeating the most woke! #worldcup2026
#QOTD New Zealand is in the run-up to a general election later this year: the centre-right coalition government is fraying and in the poll doldrums, but the centre-left counter-coalition doesn’t have the numbers to topple it. Thus, whoever wins, the future of the Shaky Isles looks shaky, a nation led by mediocrities. ~ Double Shot @SpectatorOz
