I’ve been wrong in every crisis I’ve led through… and it made me a better leader.

Over the years, I’ve led teams through the dot-com bubble, 9/11, tsunamis, financial crises, and a global pandemic.

In almost every one of those moments, I underestimated the impact those events would have on local businesses, on my business, and on my teams.

As an unabashed optimist and competitor throughout all those events, my position was always—we can beat this… we will succeed despite the obstacles.

Admittedly, I was almost always wrong about the severity of the downturn—and how long it would last.

I was right about one thing:

I believed my teams could be better than they were. That inside each of us is a higher gear—an untapped level of grit—that, if unleashed, allows us to grow despite the turbulence around us.

And we proved that.

We consistently outperformed competitors.
We beat expectations.
And when the crisis passed, we were almost always first to recover.

Here’s what I learned.

When the pandemic hit, I saw it earlier than I had in the past. I got our teams prepared ahead of the quarantines. I told them the truth—this is going to be really hard—and we’re going to get the best of it.

And we did—because we controlled what we could control and out-executed our competitors and our peers.

For those who were in it with me—you know exactly what I mean.

We may not be fully in one of those moments yet.

It’s still too early to say for sure whether we’re heading into another true period of disruption—or just a short wave of volatility.

Here’s what I’ve learned the hard way:

By the time it’s obvious to everyone… it’s too late to prepare.

So while it may be premature to declare we’re in one of those times, it’s absolutely appropriate to start operating like we are.

This is where real leadership shows up.

For our clients, that means staying focused on what actually drives results—pipeline, messaging, and execution.

You don’t panic.
You don’t freeze.
You don’t wait for certainty.

You prepare early.
You tell the truth.
You raise the standard.
And you play to win—especially when the game gets harder.

Whether this turns into a storm or passes quickly…

The teams that lean in now will be the ones standing first when it clears.
