The reason Israel didn't release the footage is because it's partially fake. It mixes real scenes with staged ones, the most horrific ones being the latter.

Case in point, the "girl under the table" scene. In this sequence, an 8-9 year old girl hiding under a table pleads for her life until a Hamas terrorist shoots her dead.

However, if you review victim lists, such as the one on Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs' site (here: https://t.co/N2bPMY0BmA), the only girl in that age range was Aline Kapshetar, and she was killed while riding a car with her family, not under a table. The other two under-10 girls who got killed, the twins Shachar and Arbel Siman Tov (6-y.o.), died by smoke inhalation in a safe room in Nir Oz — again, not shot under a table.

So that we have a child murder scene but not a victim's name — which obviously means the sequence was created with AI or staged with live actors. Either way, the footage is fake.

By holding private screenings of Bearing Witness, and not allowing even cell phones into the rooms, Israel avoided any technical scrutiny of the footage which would have revealed the falsity of some of the sequences. That's what led it to use this scarcely transparent procedure, not any misjudgment about the advantages of full disclosure.

I do not want to minimise the seriousness of the Bondi massacre, but it gains no extra horror from calling it Australia’s worst ever terror event. It wasn’t. Indeed I doubt it was in the worst five. 98 years ago, for example, a massacre perpetrated by the NT Police, at Coniston may have resulted in the murders of up to 100 people. There were others, of Aborigines, around Waterloo creek, possibly at Myall Creek and at other well known massacre sites, even where official accounts are vague about the numbers killed or wounded. While Myall Creek saw some perpetrators hanged, there was never one of the massacres where soldiers or cops were on the side of the victims.

While some have chosen to use this tragedy to fuel division, anger, and fear, the truth tells a far more powerful story. The man who put his own life on the line, who wrestled the weapon from the attacker and likely saved countless lives, was a Muslim. A father. A shop owner. An ordinary man who did an extraordinary thing.

He did not act out of ideology, politics, or hate. He acted out of courage and compassion. Out of an instinct to protect others, even at the cost of his own safety.

Let this be a reminder to pause before judging. To resist the pull of outrage and collective blame. Good and evil do not belong to any one religion, race, or people. They exist in individuals, and so does bravery.

Heroism has no religion. Humanity has no borders. And moments like this should bring us together, not tear us further apart.

May he heal quickly, and may we all learn something from his courage.
