When a chain-reaction explosion damaged @USNavy Petty Officer 2nd Class Telesforo Trinidad’s ship in 1915, he braved through smoke and flames to save two comrades. His actions made him the only Filipino sailor to have earned the #MedalofHonor.

.@SecDef Austin and President @bongbongmarcos of the Philippines met at the Pentagon today as the United States and the Philippines continue to make remarkable strides in advancing our ironclad alliance. https://t.co/83wCGS16mF
It was my pleasure to host President @bongbongmarcos at the Pentagon earlier today. We are taking crucial steps to modernize our ironclad U.S.-Philippines alliance as we advance our shared vision for preserving a free and open Indo-Pacific. 🇺🇸 🇵🇭
“The 🇺🇸United States stands with The 🇵🇭#Philippines in the face of the People’s Republic of 🇨🇳#China Coast Guard’s continued infringement upon freedom of navigation in the #SouthChinaSea…We call upon Beijing to desist from its provocative and unsafe conduct.” — @StateDeptSpox
The routine, seven-day maritime patrol carried out by the @coastguardph in the WPS from April 18-24 was non-provocative and did not undermine the interests of other states. The PCG is under no obligation to request permission from other nations while patrolling the waters near Ayungin Shoal, as this area falls within the Philippines' Exclusive Economic Zone, in accordance with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Throughout their maritime patrol operations, PCG captains consistently follow the 1972 Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs).
The recent perilous maneuver executed by the China Coast Guard against BRP Malapascua not only breached the 1982 UNCLOS, as China is not entitled to patrol other countries' EEZs, but also violated the 1972 COLREGs. The People's Republic of China is a signatory to both conventions.
China contends that the United States is escalating tensions in the South China Sea, and I am curious how they would characterize these actions. Evidently, the Chinese Coast Guard is performing dangerous maneuver that clearly jeopardize the safety of persons on board a smaller PCG vessel. 🤦🏻♂️ @GordianKnotRay@JeffreyOrdaniel@JayBatongbacal
While I commend the consistent courage of our Philippine Coast Guard sailors in patrolling the West Philippine Sea, I also extend my admiration to the journalists who accompanied them during a week-long maritime patrol to bring the story to the world.
