This is what pretty much all high level hockey people will tell you. The players have never been more skilled, but there’s a severe lack of hockey IQ and creativity.

This starts in youth hockey.

-The lack of unstructured play.
-Coaching systems instead of creativity.
-Too much emphasis on winning and players not having freedom to make mistakes.
-Skating around implements that look good on instagram rather than drills with decision making.

The game has changed because how we coach kids and the business of hockey have changed at the youth levels.

The fact that Kucherov is speaking to it is wild.

Tom Brady says his career turned around when a sports psychologist told him to stop complaining about what he wasn’t getting and start stewarding what he had the right way

@anthea_jh @rupasubramanya @MarkJCarney I disagree that this is sufficient. Answering questions from a free press, not ones subsidised by the government, is integral to democracy. But the press alone does not fulfill the requirement for accountability in the House of Commons by elected members of the Opposition.

@rupasubramanya @MarkJCarney Agree. Interprovincial trade is an embarrassment and must be address. Perhaps this will be the silver lining here - a prompt from the US to driver us to figure this out. Tax reform & regulation, just as critically, needs to be addressed, federally & provincially.

@rupasubramanya I hope Canadians are past it, but to the question about the PM going to Europe before Ottawa is, has our government moved on or are they still working toward that end, though with less fanfare? This move continues to raise that question. How can that be asked and not dismissed?

@Pete___Hughes So true. Too much emphasis on individual skill development and yet these players need to work more on how to read the game (timing, routes), or how to protect the puck and win along the boards, or work with their teammates, for example.

Played 1 year in the Q.
*Watched* MVP Biz in the prospects game on TV.
Second round in the NHL draft.
Made the B's as an 18 year old.

Prospects ... it ain't a science, right?

@Pete___Hughes @Singsy24 He was amazing, even though I hated him and even had a hard time liking him in Canadian red. (I'll never forget Mike Eaves.) That said, I believe it was the '87 Canada Cup and the Swedes said he was Canada's best player, with his overall play.

@Pete___Hughes He looked so easy for him it was almost lazy but he scored, defended, fought, never missed games. Gretz telling how in the WHA all-star game he said put the puck in my corner and go to the next. Gretz did and the puck arrived on time. He couldn't believe it & #9 was 50 y/o!

1/ I believe Howe is getting forgotten as the years go by. Forget the raw numbers, he was a top 5 scorer for 20 yrs in a row that is against some pretty good peers. Great 5v5 and strong defensively, like #11. Maybe Crosby with more skill?

@Pete___Hughes 3/ Mario would have beat Gretz in scoring if he played 5 more yrs in the 80's & had his health. Amazingly skilled player for his size. Where he slips in my mind is on the defensive side. He'd go into is zone and tap his winger to go do the work while he waited for the puck

@Pete___Hughes 2/ Orr, bad knees and all was a absolute beast. Scoring like mad but defending like a boss. Almost averaged a +1 a game if you can believe that. If he was healthy maybe he would have won more scoring titles, Stanley Cups, Norris trophies. Great 5v5, beast defending and physical.
