One year since 12-year-old Bridgit Njoki Wainaina was shot and killed inside her own home during the 2025 Saba Saba protests, her family is still asking the most basic question in any constitutional democracy. Who pulled the trigger, and who will be held to account?

I stand with Bridgit’s family, friends, classmates and every victim of police brutality whose pain has been normalised and whose cases have been delayed, diluted or ignored. Never again shall Kenyans be killed by trigger-happy officers for expressing their rights on the streets.

The Constitution does not permit stray bullets and unknown officers. It demands truth, individual responsibility and institutional reform. Our duty is to defend the right to life, to peaceful assembly and to equal protection of the law, especially for children who should be safest in their homes.

I call upon the IG, IPOA and the ODPP. Account for every life lost during the protests, publish the status of all investigations involving police killings, and prioritise charges against officers implicated in excessive and lethal force. Justice for Bridgit is justice for every Kenyan who has paid with blood for daring to speak.

To Bridgit’s family, you are not alone. We will continue to memorialise her and insist that reparations for victims carry the same weight as consequences for perpetrators. Kenya must choose, impunity or a future where no parent has to bury a child because an officer treated a protest as war.

In the 2022 elections, about 8 million registered Kenyan voters did not turn up to vote because for many of them, there simply wasn’t a candidate who inspired them.

When voter registration was happening last year, the same pattern emerged. Young people were registering in very low numbers because once again, they didn’t have a reason to. But from March this year, during the enhanced voter registration exercise, something changed. Young people started turning up in large numbers. They had finally found a reason.

The millions who stayed away from the ballot in 2022, most of them young people will also come out in 2027 because at last, they have found the kind of leadership they have been yearning for.

Edwin Sifuna is more than a presidential candidate. He embodies the hopes and aspirations of millions of Kenyans who in the previous election felt unheard and unrepresented. Whether as the flag bearer or as part of the presidential ticket, his presence fundamentally changes the political equation.

Gen Z did more than reject a Finance Bill, they rewired our politics. From TikTok spaces to court corridors, they disrupted the old script of tribal mobilisation and elite bargains by insisting that public power answer to constitutional principle and economic justice. Their leaderless, tribeless, crowd-sourced organising exposed how quickly informed citizens can fact-check officials, decode bills and turn legalese into rallying cries for accountability. In doing so, they reminded the country that Article 1 is not a slogan but a living reality. All sovereign power belongs to the people, and those who exercise it do so on terms.

Gen Z forced courts to speak faster, MPs to apologise and an Executive that had grown tone-deaf to finally listen. They made institutions feel public pressure in real time and showed that silence in the face of abuse of power is a professional and generational betrayal. Our duty now is to entrench that energy into institutions and not let it fade with the news cycle. If Gen Z could reclaim the streets and the digital public square, the least we can do is ensure that their courage is translated into lasting legal, policy and cultural reform, not another round of cosmetic concessions.

As this moment continues to unfold, let it also be guided by responsibility. Stay safe, remain peaceful and look out for one another. The strength of a movement is not only in its conviction but in its discipline and care for human life. Be each other’s keepers because the future we are demanding must also be one we protect.
