I’ve been following the Oburu Odinga meeting with Ruto over the 10-point agenda Raila Odinga left behind, and something deeply troubling stood out.

Oburu said people should not wake up and call for protests simply because the law allows it. He even suggested those who do so should be punished. As he said this, Kimani Ichung’wah and other Kenya Kwanza leaders were laughing.

Let that sink in.

ODM, the very party built on protests, resistance, and standing up to power, now has leaders warning citizens against exercising their constitutional right to protest.

Oburu also claimed that the 10-point agenda was never meant to be implemented by the 7th, but was a “lifetime framework.” Yet the agreement Raila Odinga signed clearly indicated that most of those commitments were expected by that date.

Meanwhile today:
• Abductions continue.
• Police brutality continues.
• Citizens raising concerns are told to stay quiet.

And now the message from some ODM leaders appears to be: don’t protest.
That is not the ODM many people believed in.
