Florence Pugh has multiple nude scenes in East of Eden.
Literally days after I finally pull the trigger and cancel my Netflix subscription, they release something that completely bucks expectations of how weak and "safe" they'd gotten.
And to point out the important part, Netflix aren't merely the exclusive distributor, which is the case for a lot of films and series with the Netflix label. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but when the business decision comes after the actual production, the influence on direction is much, much smaller.
But for East of Eden, there are articles dating back to 2022 referring to the project as a Netflix development, which was an entire two years before filming began. Suffice it to say, the service wasn't just rolling the dice with a package deal that they thought could sell well.
I know this isn't a first. Altered Carbon was a Netflix development from the start, and the first season of that was deliciously lewd, but that was a long time ago, and by the time we got to the second season, that just about entirely dissipated, and that vibe carried laterally across Netflix productions.
Is this Netflix's big comeback to making content for audiences rather than for HR box-tickers or just a happy accident (like the one in my pants 💦 - ayoooo)?
