It is #FlumeFriday AND #FishFriday, my dudes! In honor, pllease enjoy this video of one of my smallies Kármán gaiting in our #EEL racetrack flume.
What is Kármán gaiting? SO GLAD YOU ASKED.
@RoseMGifford1@WhySharksMatter It's difficult to research your way to this knowledge because the reality of what it takes to get a job in marine bio or a similar field is rarely shared. It's something you often have to learn from people in the field already- who are typically inaccessible to a HS student.
🐟 We all need freshwater biodiversity!
🌊 A major new study describes nine reasons why freshwaters are so crucial to human lives.

Fish physiology is HIGHLY underutilized in aquatic habitat restoration- but a tool w/ massive potential.

@CKristofic@PhillyJan@SibelOktay I'd wager that most jobs that require PhDs don't even surpass $100k. I'm about to make $50k at my first post-doctorate job and I'm thrilled to be making that much.
@HeatherWeaverDC Hard agree. My bud is dog-reactive when he's leashed. He's been attacked by enough off-leash dogs that just seeing an off-leash dog freaks him out and sets his training back. He should get to enjoy the outdoors without having to be afraid.
@sydneyesbrown @rikkelmania @amandatoryfigs @HeatherWeaverDC Off-leash and dropped leash aren't quite the same. Mistakes happen, people will be sympathetic to that. I highly recommend waist leashes to prevent this. Dropped my dog's leash hiking in a national forest, he took off. Waist leash ever since. Super nice to have my hands free.
@BruceLRogersPhD @anitasgiraldo @ArthropodAbbey Being a drone is exactly what you're praising here- shut up and do it because people before you have had to do it too.
The narrative that you are not a good or ambitious scientist because you won't repeatedly sacrifice your life and well-being for your work needs to die.
@hydropsyche1 @E_Carlen I'm astounded at how many people with PhDs are pushing the same misconceptions we struggle to remedy in 100-level biology classes. I've taught college freshmen with a better understanding of evolution than some of what's on display in this thread.
An enviro group contacted my friend (a biologist) to ask if she knew anyone that could provide vids or photos of NZ native wildlife. My friend contacted me and asked if I would help out. This was the response when she told the group that my photos would be of native mussels.
@fishpeopleplace @JordanHHartman@AcademicChatter Do you mean a fish T-shirt or a button-down/blouse? I've been hunting for a professional-ish fish shirt to wear at conferences for ages, but there's so little available for women.
@JordanHHartman@AcademicChatter I always agonize over what to wear, just to see guys show up in camo or sports sandals. Anyone that thinks we're girly for wearing dresses was going to look down on us any way. I'm trying to embrace wearing whatever makes me feel confident and professional. Others be damned.
@alina_i_robello@Canad_IANism@BraedenFRev That may be true at your university, but it is certainly not true for all. It varies wildly. I don't know a single Masters student whose focus wasn't research, and in my program many of them teach to get their tuition waiver and stipend.
Can any Illinois fishfolk help ID these guys? Saw them yesterday in Champaign, in a creek that drains into the Kaskaskia.
I think they're some kind of redhorse, but beyond that I'm not sure! They had super sharp-looking dorsal fins, visible near the end of this clip.
