I have 4 college students. I’m a previous generation - X, to be exact. It’s true that we got predictable career arcs and social capital but it’s gone now for us as well. Whatever can any of us do?

I encourage my kids to NEVER ONCE look back (except for in history class, and even then you should be careful) to ANYTHING. What was is always gone, in a manner of speaking. What I just thought is also gone. The Minute you look back, you pause; and we do not have time to pause for bitterness or ennui. Life and success are too fleeting. Only imagine what can be and don’t look to the right or left.

What your gen needs is to think less about yourselves in general. Who cares who did you wrong? Most people can ID someone who did them wrong. It doesn’t make you special! Just GO. GO. Let the wind of MISSION fill your sails (I know you feel this way, from Your profile) completely IGNORE failure or obstacle, just do it! The best thing to do with an obstacle is to disregard it in belief.

I think that it is an interesting parallel that Gen Z is anti dogma, to rely on their intellect that has been touted as all knowing- about things that transcend the intellect. AND they do not have a whole lot of optimism. Could it be that a dogma and hope are actually related?

With all due respect, you guys gotta believe and FOCUS. Widen the concept of success in your own mind. No marriage partner? The apostle Paul sowed his entire life into the future if the faith minus a spouse. Catherine of Sienna found incredible fulfillment in a cloistered life that was given to study. It is not expected that the world would ever conform to what it used to be- you never know!! Just Insist that the quality of person you have leanred to become be respected in all scenarios. Just don’t accept rejection! Insist, or as I say, to my kids, “worth-ify” yourself wherever you go, by drilling down in ETERNAL VALUES rather than the pedantic trope of class ENVY. This way, you are worthy because of these truths you ally yourself alongside. And as a bonus, you won’t sound redundant- because class envy is kind of an old line. It just makes you less respectable to keep harping on that old line.

Keep. moving. Forward. That’s the answer my boy. Don’t let hesitation or complaint stop you. When there is a decision to make, just DO something, even if it may be the wrong thing (Teddy Roosevelt) have Courage. And in order to have courage- stop thinking so much.

Added every single one back to the cart just to see.

$158.30.
Same 28 items. Same store. Same cart.
$93.80 more.

In five years.
We didn’t buy more.
Didn’t upgrade anything.
Didn’t add a single extra item.

Just needed the same things we always needed.

They told us inflation was transitory. They told us it was under control. They told us the economy was strong.

Our cart didn’t get any of those memos.
145% increase in five years.
