Deep-sea #hydrothermal vents were unknown to science until 1977, when #oceanographers discovered them on a research expedition along the Eastern Galapágos Spreading Center. #USGS scientists returned to investigate these vents and their #marineminerals: https://t.co/nPUxcAJkg8
New album just dropped. 🆕🆕🆕
Actually, it's a booklet that provides an overview of the coastal and marine research conducted by the USGS in Santa Cruz, California: https://t.co/wIsKFs38KH
“It is no exaggeration to say all life on earth is inextricably tied to the rocks upon which we live and geological processes occurring deep inside the planet.” The new #GalapagosVents video explores interdisciplinary research & its history.

@_david_ho_ These test mining ops by TMC included extensive environmental evaluation including a second vessel of independent scientists measuring sediment plumes via numerous methods. Mining regs will include thresholds for impacts. There will be impacts, no doubt, but not going unchecked.
Allseas & NORI recently wrapped up the first integrated system trials in the CCZ since the 1970s, lifting over 3,000 tonnes of nodules. The pilot system will next be upgraded to 1.3MTPA production capacity ahead of our first commercial project, Project 0.

@emilykmay I don’t think it should be impossible for mixed genders of mixed ages to interact. I was driven home by dads, and we managed to be mature and have nice conversations. We don’t need to be spared from all possibly awkward interactions - let’s bridge gaps not maintain them.
The @USGS Global Marine Mineral Resources project researches deep ocean minerals throughout the Earth’s oceans, aiming to provide stakeholders with the best available science regarding potential resources and any impacts associated with accessing them: https://t.co/hLTCNaFAjW

I am honored to be attending #COP27 with an amazing group of #SIO next generation scientists. They are engaging with climate stakeholders and policymakers at the #oceanpavilion in Egypt this week.
@DeepMicrobe Just to clarify that they called “for a conditional moratorium on deep sea mining in areas beyond national jurisdiction, until a Mining Code can be agreed that ensures the effective protection of the marine environment.” Not a permanent ban.
If you’re interested in the development of deep sea mining regulations, including environmental regulation and monitoring, tune in to the live international meeting anytime October 31 - November 11 to witness the lengthy and careful negotiations
