If you followed Cristiano Ronaldo’s career from the beginning, you’d know how true this statement is. He genuinely wasn’t supposed to become the player who would score 700, 800, or even chase 1,000 official career goals. That’s what makes his journey so extraordinary and why Dad is GOAT.

When he broke through at Sporting, Ronaldo wasn’t known as a goalscorer. He was an exciting, unpredictable winger who loved taking defenders on. His game was built around pace, stepovers, tricks, and flair. He’d beat three or four players, but his end product was often questioned. His longevity is just as remarkable as his talent. Most forwards enjoy 4 or 5 elite seasons before injuries, age, or loss of motivation catch up with them. Ronaldo has maintained toop goalscoring levels for almost two decades. He adapted to different leagues, different managers, different teammates, and even different roles, yet the goals never stopped. There’s a reason he’s the only player to have scored 100+ goals for 5 different teams.

People also forget that he didn’t spend his entire career as a striker. A larger part of his early years was spent hugging the touchline, creating chances for others rather than staying inside the box. If you had told football fans in 2004 that this skinny winger with flashy stepovers would eventually outscore virtually every striker in history, most would have laughed.

His obsession with improvement is what really separates him. Every weakness became a target. He improved his weaker foot, heading, free-kicks, movement, finishing under pressure, physical conditioning, and even his understanding of space. While other players relied on natural ability, Ronaldo treated improvement like a full-time job.

That’s why his goals aren’t just a reflection of talent, they’re a reflection of discipline, adaptability, professionalism, and an unmatched mentality. He didn’t become one of football’s greatest goalscorers because that’s what everyone expected. He became one because he refused to stop evolving.

When we say Ronaldo wasn’t supposed to score this many goals, we’re absolutely right. He wasn’t born as a natural No. 9. He built himself into one through relentless work, constant reinvention, and an obsession with becoming better every single season. That’s what makes his goalscoring record one of the greatest achievements the sport has ever seen.
