Hey #microtwitter - we had a seminar speaker fall through for 1/14/21. Anyone interested in presenting a virtual seminar on that date to a friendly Microbiology department? I'd especially love to host URM speakers. Please reach out if interested (and please retweet otherwiese).
Given all the interest in masks and aerosols, my group will host a free 90min webinar on mask design and performance for #COVID19 next week. Please spread the word!
WHEN: 17 Sep, 9:30 MT (GMT-6)

A good reminder to re-enter your lab purposefully. Procedures may look different in light of COVID-19; consider the changes you need and implement them.
When restarting lab work, remember to review your SOPs for startup procedures and make changes to reflect reduced personnel, if needed! Take a look at our checklist for more ideas for #chemistry safety! @UChicago_JRSI#AcademicTwitter#research
Do you love animals and biology? Join me in this Weds, 6/24, when I'll be in conversation with the brilliant science writers @edyong209 (I Contain Multitudes) and @RebeccaSkloot (Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks) for a #WeLoveBookstores benefit! https://t.co/kTzjztSj4c
Excited to share the news... our Lakefront Trail will be reopening on June 22 for exercise and transit!
To ensure we continue the progress we've made flattening the curve, Social Distancing Ambassadors will be along the route to ensure a safe experience for Chicagoans.
The @BlueAngels will fly over Chicago today to salute healthcare workers, first responders and other essential workers on the frontlines of the #COVID19 pandemic. We are reminding those who will be watching the flyover to please practice social distancing and stay safe.
During the #COVID19 pandemic, this @CDCgov reminder about glove protocol is beneficial to those working in labs--or those using gloves to help protect themselves elsewhere. Removing gloves incorrectly can actually increase health hazards.

Drinking your milk *and* #SocialDistancing make you stronger.
If you have to go out in public, remember to keep a distance of at least 12 gallons of milk from others.

On masks, many ppl have Very Strong Opinions. I don't think it's clear-cut either way, and I've tried to lay out & evaluate the reasons for/against widespread usage. I hope it's useful to ppl making hard decisions amid contradictory views & imperfect data

"There are now only two groups of Americans. Group A includes everyone involved in the medical response [...]. Group B includes everyone else, and their job is to buy Group A more time."
Please read this brilliant @edyong209 piece.

I wrote about the new coronavirus itself--where it came from, why it's behaving in the way it's behaving, how it infects and kills, and what the summer might bring. It's early days, of course, but this serves as a rough preliminary portrait of SARS-CoV-2. https://t.co/GL4wrlvN0r
microbiology PSA: this is why you should avoid bleach inactivation of liquid media en masse in general and if necessary, do it in the fume hood. something like m9 medium usually has quite a bit of NH4 in excess, so bleaching without ventilation makes chloramine ☠️☠️☠️
This is such an important read for anyone who is doing bench chemistry and using syringes to transfer materials! We spend a lot of time talking about what to do if a chemical gets on your skin, but what about when it gets under it? #labsafety#chemsafety#chemtwitter
