A common misperception about artificial sweeteners is that they acutely spike blood sugar and insulin.
The truth is more insidious and more problematic.
If you have a diet soda or artificial sweeteners, your blood sugar and insulin don’t rise acutely.
However, there are data, including human data, showing that shifts to the microbiome can cause insulin resistance and increased insulin levels over time.
A landmark trial published in Nature found that when artificial sweetener-naive humans were given artificial sweeteners, just over half developed insulin resistance within one week.
Importantly, transplanting their microbiomes before and after artificial sweetener exposure could transfer the insulin resistance phenotype to animals, proving the mechanism was mediated by the microbiome.
I didn’t say a Diet Coke is worse than a Coke.
