Sardar Sham Singh Attariwala
Sardar Sham Singh Attariwala stands as one of the last great warrior-statesmen of the Sikh Empire, remembered for choosing martyrdom over surrender at Sobraon in 1846.
Sardar Sham Singh Attariwala (1790–1846) was a distinguished general of the Khalsa Army and a trusted noble of Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s court.
Hailing from Attari near Amritsar, he embodied the martial spirit, discipline, and spiritual conviction that defined the Sikh Empire at its height.
Even in his later years, when age could have excused him from the battlefield, he remained steadfast in duty.
During the First Anglo-Sikh War (1845–1846), internal betrayals and political instability had weakened the once-formidable empire.
Yet at the decisive Battle of Sobraon on 10 February 1846, Sham Singh refused retreat. Fully aware of the fragile situation and the possibility of defeat, he reportedly dressed in white - symbolizing readiness for martyrdom - and declared his intention to die fighting rather than witness subjugation.
He led from the front, rallying demoralized troops as British artillery thundered against Sikh defenses. Surrounded and outnumbered, he fought until his last breath.
Though Sobraon marked the effective end of Sikh sovereignty, Sham Singh Attariwala’s sacrifice immortalized him as a symbol of courage, loyalty, and unwavering faith in the Khalsa ideal.
