@Top100Rick Played it 9 years ago for a surprise 60th bday round for my father in law. One of the best days of my life. Was pricey but nowhere near that much…and worth every penny. Sucks u had bad weather. #bucketlist
We crucified Alex Anthopoulos when he was here but have now put up with eight years of Ross “The Mouth” Atkins.
I for one am sick of it. And I bet so are you.
I’ve followed the Blue Jays personally and professionally - podcasting, interviewing, radio jibjab, et al - for nearly four decades as an independent journalist, and I can safely say that this 2023 team will go down in franchise history as the most disappointing to me - more than the 1985 Royals playoff collapse, 1987 Tigers final week of the season fiasco, or the 2015 Donaldson/Price/Tulo team that really should have won it all.
For a club to have such an extraordinary foundation of brilliant starting and relief pitching in a season where they’ve lost their ace, the table was set for a remarkable year. One of veteran guidance and promising talent coming to fruition. Or at least that’s what Shapkins were selling us.
Instead, Springer never found his groove, Chapman disappeared after the second week in May, Bichette carried the team on his back until injured, Vladdy revealed himself to be nothing but an ordinary player hyped by overzealous corporate media machine coverage, personal favourite Jansen got hurt forcing us to watch a struggling Kirk, Varsho still can’t hit himself out of a paper bag, and John Schneider literally sabotaged half a dozen games with inexplicably bush league decision-making.
And yet for all their almost laughable offensive shortcomings and profound lack of clutch hitting, this team always battled hard defensively, night in and night out, putting themselves in a position where world class defense and pitching met minor league hitting and still found ways to win.
But in the final analysis, what this team truly lacks is good old fashioned gumption. A will to win that goes beyond just showing up and dousing players with water and asking for noise and convincing the faithful that what we’re seeing is really better than what it actually is.
Because it ain’t.
The 1992 and 1993 had mettle and a manager who let them play. They worked hard from day one and never made excuses.
The 2023 Jays could learn a great deal from them.
