Lets get this straight, people. a coach or teammate can’t *assist* a batter. Giving a high five or pat on the back isn’t assisting the runner. Touching them isn’t an out.
This young lady hit the biggest hit of her life- an over the fence home run.
As she rounds third and heads for home, the umpire calls her out as she steps on home plate.
Rules are rules, but as an umpire, I wouldn’t have called her out and robbed her of that home run.
You make the call…
Permanent DST passed the House but is DOA in the Senate because Southern states want more afternoon light but Northern states don't want kids to go to school in the dark.
So my modest proposal: permanent DST but midwest and northeast shift one zone West.
Everybody gets exactly what they want 🙌
You decide America. You decide really fucking quickly. Is this what you want your country doing? Is this what you want America to be? And if the answer is no, then you have a civic duty to vote every damn Republican out of office in November. Every damn one of them. You have a civic duty to put what ICE is doing in front of everyone you know. You have a civic duty to protest ICE everywhere & film ICE everywhere. And you have a civic duty to be prepared to engage in civil disobedience.
@conorsen@mattyglesias The root of the issue is that rec ball in most places is just really bad… if you’re at all good, you need the travel competition to even have fun. If you can throw 55 at 10, but no one can catch it, that sucks.
@conorsen Can confirm for baseball. When you get older, you’ll add Birmingham and Florida maybe. But, teams come to Lakepoint or East Cobb from all over.
@funnydanny Won’t defend assholes on the internet…. But, this is a clear red card at any level. If his cleats were pointed down, no red. foot through the ball, no red.
over the ball studs into the leg: red.
A critical element that the "rulebook purists" arguing Balogun deserved a red card are conveniently overlooking:
BALOGUN was the one who was challenged from behind.
The Bosnian player played *through* Balogun from behind and placed himself in the path of Balogun's natural step.
When he begins taking that step, Balogun has no idea the Bosnian player would even be in front of him. In that sense, you can't really even consider his move a "challenge." It was simply a step that incidentally landed in the same place the opponent's foot did.
In fact, the reason Balogun's step came down so hard is *because* the Bosnian player challenged into him and knocked him off balance.
This is not "reckless" or "excessive force" by any stretch of the imagination.
The red card was *obviously* unjustified from the outset. The only thing FIFA got wrong here is not immediately suspending the red card after the match.
@conorsen@AndyBarr34 Odds that the 2038 World Cup won’t have any open air stadiums included? Or, at least, nothing after the R32 with the exception the Azteca. I’d say pretty high.
@GrantPaulsen Like Sam Holbrook’s infield fly in the braves cardinals series some years back, I can tell you why each call is technically correct … but in the context of the game completely wrong.
USA. A Mexican restaurant. We had not yet ordered anything, and the food was already arriving.
Chips. Salsa. Unrequested. Free.
I stopped the waiter. "We have not earned these."
"They just come with the table, man."
They come with the TABLE. In my land, hospitality is a debt. Every gift creates an obligation, weighed carefully, returned in the proper season with interest of feeling. Here, the gift arrives before you have even proven you can pay for dinner.
This is not an appetizer. This is a declaration: we trust you. Eat.
I ate with the gravity the moment deserved. And then — I must report this calmly — the basket emptied, and a new one appeared.
"Did we…?"
"Refill," the waiter said. "It's bottomless."
Bottomless. They have wells of salsa. The supply lines of this nation are beyond anything my ancestors imagined.
My friend warned me. "Don't fill up on chips, dude."
Too late. I had accepted three baskets. Honor demanded each one be finished — an unfinished gift is an insult. By the time my actual food arrived, I was a ruined man.
I was not hungry. I was not comfortable. I had been defeated by a courtesy.
Generosity that arrives before the request cannot be repaid. It can only be survived.
I know the rule now. I have made my peace with the basket. One basket. Two at the most.
Who am I deceiving. There is no number of baskets I would refuse. The trust of a nation is in that salsa, and I intend to honor all of it.
