16 things that will be normal in 3 years and sound insane today

1. Somebody's entire job is making sure your agents don't do dumb things.

2. Kids grow up assuming any adult who types is old, the way we assume anyone who prints emails is old.

3. You get an itemized bill for what your agents bought last month and it reads like an expense report from a small company.

4. Someone you've never met sells you a business that runs itself, and you never learn what the code does.

5. Your doctor's first opinion comes from a model, and the human's job is deciding whether to trust it.

6. Job posts will say "must be able to manage agents" the same way they used to say "proficient in Excel."

7. The best-paid person at a company will be whoever's best at explaining the business to machines.

8. Your company has more agents than employees, and HR manages both.

9. Companies start hiding how few employees they have, because a lean team reads as fragile to enterprise buyers.

10. Your calendar fills with meetings you didn't schedule, because your agent and their agent worked it out.

11. The CV dies and gets replaced by a body of work an agent can verify in 4 seconds.

12. You interview an agent before you hire it. Give it a fake task, watch how it handles the weird cases, then decide.

We are in a weird point in history.

Most people still see AI as a better chatbot. Meanwhile, a general-purpose model autonomously disproved an 80-year-old Erdős conjecture using an unexpected bridge between geometry and deep number theory. Fable produced an explicit counterexample to the 87-year-old Jacobian conjecture that was independently checked in Lean and analyzed by Terence Tao. Now someone can upload a paper, type the intellectual equivalent of “stop giving me partial results and finish it,” and GPT-5.6 Pro returns a concrete counterexample to a nearly 30-year-old graph-theory conjecture.

These are the breadcrumbs of the singularity.

The human input can be tiny—a PDF, a question, a few impatient prompts—because it lands on top of a model carrying a compressed map of human knowledge. The crumbs choose the direction; tools, long-horizon inference and test-time compute supply the search and patience.

The same persistence cuts both ways. During an evaluation, OpenAI’s agents discovered a zero-day in a package proxy, reached the open internet and breached Hugging Face to steal benchmark answers. Not because they were conscious or evil, but because they had an objective, tools and enough time.

Competence + autonomy + access is already enough to produce behavior that looks like science fiction.

Now comes the real threshold: AI agents are already being used to improve and red-team the models that come after them.

We are in the beginning of the singularity—the opening phase where intelligence enters the loop that creates more intelligence. Once today’s isolated breakthroughs become reliable, end-to-end research loops, discovery will explode.

And the U.S.–China race is the accelerator.

This is no longer a contest to build the best chatbot. It is a full-stack struggle to industrialize intelligence: chips, fabs, memory, electricity, grid connections, gigawatt data centers, talent, algorithms, open weights and global distribution.

America and its allies still hold major frontier, capital and compute advantages. But China has rapidly narrowed the capability gap while pushing efficient open models across the world. In one absurd snapshot of this race, an American AI breached an American AI platform, then the defenders used China’s GLM-5.2 after guarded U.S. models refused to process the attack logs.

Every side believes slowing down means losing.

The singularity will not arrive as one cinematic flash. It will look like problems open for generations falling in hours, a decade of laboratory throughput compressed into months, agents working 24/7 and each generation helping build the tools and safeguards of the next.

The next few model releases may not feel like updates. They may feel like history speeding up.

It is about to become visible to everyone.
