The modernisation and expansion of the United Nations Office at Nairobi is a powerful expression of inclusivity, geographical balance and the universality of the United Nations system.
To complement the modernisation of the UN campus, we are investing $1.1 billion in complementary support for Nairobi’s infrastructure upgrade, including roads, street lighting, regeneration of the Nairobi Rivers, ICT systems security, and the operationalisation of the UN One-Stop Shop.
This investment affirms Nairobi’s role as the UN’s headquarters in the Global South, a centre of international diplomacy, and a symbol of international cooperation.
Additionally, we are modernising the Bomas Convention Complex to strengthen Kenya’s position as a hub for international conferencing.
Broke ground for the construction of the expanded United Nations Office at Nairobi Assembly Hall, Gigiri, and inaugurated the new United Nations Office block alongside UN Secretary-General @antonioguterres.

What does it take to build a summit agenda that reflects Africa’s own priorities?
For months, our team at the State Department for Foreign Affairs has worked together with our colleagues from France and other continental and global partners to ensure that the 7 thematic pillars at the heart of this Summit are fully shaped by Africa’s own strategic development agenda and priorities.
The result is a summit where we advance discussions on:
⚡Energy transition as a development and industrial agenda
🖥️AI and digital sovereignty as a co-creation partnership
🏦Reform of international finance as a matter of equity and access
🌊Blue economy as a frontier of strategic opportunity
This establishes our continent as a shaper of the agenda, and our global partnerships being anchored on mutual benefit. @ForeignOfficeKE@FranceinKenya

Received a comparative study report on the administration of diplomatic privileges and immunities across UN duty stations, a key step in strengthening Kenya’s position as a leading global diplomatic hub.
We will leverage these insights to align with international best practices, enhance service delivery to the diplomatic community, and reinforce Nairobi’s role as the only UN Headquarters in the Global South.
As the UN continues to expand its presence in Nairobi, these reforms will streamline processes, improve efficiency and further position Kenya as a preferred destination for diplomacy and multilateral engagement.
I have directed all relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies to move with speed and clear timelines towards implementation, including preparations for the first Diplomatic Conference on privileges and immunities in June 2026.
I commend the inter-agency team led by Amb. Daniel Wambura, alongside key institutions including the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Kenya Revenue Authority, State Department for Immigration, Kenya Airports Authority, NTSA and the Diplomatic Police Unit.
Present were Dr. Ida Odinga, Kenya’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to UNEP, Chief of Staff Joseph Busiega, Amb. Josphat Maikara, Director General for Political and Diplomatic Affairs, Ms. Evelyn Cheluget, Director General for Immigration, Dr. Rose Koros, Manager, JKIA, and Dr. Resila A. Onyango, Commandant, Diplomatic Police Unit, among other senior officials.
Welcomed Dr. @IdaOdinga, Kenya’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to United Nations Environment Programme, for a courtesy call.
I congratulated Mama Ida as she takes up this important role, serving as the key link between Kenya and the UN’s environmental arm here in Nairobi. Her leadership will be central in advancing Kenya’s voice on global environmental policy, strengthening our push for sustainable development, and reinforcing our position as host to @UNEP.
We also had a forward-looking discussion on how we continue to deepen Kenya’s partnership with the United Nations, particularly as it expands its footprint in Nairobi. This includes positioning our capital as a leading logistics and humanitarian hub, alongside the establishment of new global offices for @UNICEF, United Nations Population Fund, and UN Women.
As we scale this presence, we are equally focused on improving the welfare and working environment for the UN and the broader diplomatic community in Kenya, ensuring Nairobi remains a premier global hub.
