He’s right you MUST read this if you work a 9-5. This is deeply insightful and very practical. Some of my best mentors and exec sponsors have echoed these exact sentiments. This is going into my career guide hall of fame (easily)
abuse your unfair advantage everywhere
everyone has it
> if you live in your mom's basement w no responsibilities, work 12 hr days
> if your know a guy who knows a guy, call that guy
> if your parents paid for ur college, invest your time in up-skilling urself
you were not raised to be a bum
life isnt an even playing field
all the "winners" are not playing fair
to catch up you have to identify your unfair advantage
and abuse it
There is always more than one way to do something. Write down as many ways as you can think of to achieve your desired outcome. Then, rank them based on how much time they take, how much money they cost, and how effective you expect them to be. Choose the best.
There’s an infinite amount of unsolved human problems (hunger, disease, housing, illiteracy) that I’d expect intelligence to be directed at.
Somehow, the discourse oscillates between better email management & existential doom.
Why doesn’t AI make a meaningful dent in today’s most consequential problems? Are we just really early in the cycle and in the toy phase? Are those problems just not fixed by better intelligence?
I think the healthiest form of ambition is simply curiosity about your own potential.
How good could I get at this? How far could I take it? What would happen if I gave this everything I had for five years?
A lot of people kill that curiosity before they ever get an answer. They decide what's realistic based on their environment, their age, their circumstances, or what other people have managed to accomplish.
Ambition is just refusing to decide your limits before you've actually reached them.
I’m in love with this sentence:
“Every pattern in your life repeats until you learn the lesson. The moment you choose differently, the loop ends and growth begins.”
I don’t know how to explain it further or maybe I don’t want to, but people who are successful at their careers are not the regular 9-5ers. They don’t keep the mindset of people who watch the time while they work!
That’s who this lady is!
She’s an engineer, she has worked beyond her working hours. And from what Femi has said, she has also gone an extra mile to deliver meals!
Again, a dev! While others might have foams in their mouths if you ever ask them to do such, she is doing it as a pathway to understand user behaviour that in turn helps her to build a super app!
This is not advice! There’s no moral to this story. I am not asking you to do anything. But people who want to join us at the top 20% of our careers will definitely take this as a wake up call!
NOBODY IS SUCCESSFUL IN THEIR CAREERS BY LOOKING AT THEIR 9-5 CLOCK!
Selah; this is my sermon today!
