The Raimi Spider-Man movies are some of my favorite blockbusters but I could never get behind this sentiment that their depiction of Spider-Man and Mary Jane are faithful renderings of the comic characters. They're good characters but they're completely different ones

SM2 isn’t a masterpiece bc Peter is suffering all the time. It’s one because it treats its characters like real people with full lives beyond the bounds of the scenes we’re watching and that allows us to fully invest in their drama.
I think what's so frustrating when discussing Spider-Man 2 is that it's genuinely a great film, but it's existence has poisoned the way people talk about the character. Now everyone thinks that Peter Parker has to suffer 24/7 in order for the story to be considered good.
