My brother Joel M. Weinbrot worked at PayPal’s Austin office for 7 years as a senior content designer. Strong reviews. Promotions. Raises. Then PayPal laid him off in May, choosing AI replacements over the humans who built the company.

He was pressured into signing his severance with no check-in, no guardrails, just erased like a number on a spreadsheet.

Two months later, on June 20, 2026, Joel died by suicide.

Not literally, of course, but as a system: you killed my brother, PayPal.

This is what happens when corporations chase AI efficiency without any regard for the people they discard. You are dealing with human beings, not lines of code. Mental health support should be mandatory, paid, and on the clock, especially during mass layoffs, especially in high-pressure fintech.

Joel only ever wanted to write short fiction and novels. His beautiful mind is gone because a company decided a machine was cheaper than a man with seven years of loyalty.

The narrative needs to be changed, especially for those men who society told must “suck it up, buttercup” and remain tough.

A semicolon ( ; ) is a quiet symbol. When it’s not being used as punctuation, it most certainly represents those who almost ended their story, those whose stories ended too soon, and the people still here missing them. Kindness goes a long way if you notice one. (;)
