I think the p1 ending was written open ended intentionally after csm boomed in popularity so that it could be followed up on once they realized they could get a bigger bag out of the series tbh. Theory crafting sure but-

P1 could have never gotten a follow up and the ending would have been acceptable at worst. There’s not really a ton of setup outside of those last few chapters
