[🟢] NEW: Liverpool consider Andoni Iraola one of the best coaches available and perfectly suited to evolving the team’s style.
They were also attracted by his proven performance in the Premier League, where he improved Bournemouth year-on-year without having the resources of the majority of his competitors and made them an exciting, high-pressing team.
His track-record of improving players individually and collectively also appealed, as did his personality and leadership skills.

[🟢] NEW: Yan Diomande is a leading target although Leipzig are reluctant to sell and Paris Saint-Germain are also keen. A new right-back is also wanted with Conor Bradley recovering from a serious knee injury and Jeremie Frimpong more of a back-up option.

[🟢] NEW: An experienced CB and a midfielder could also be added to the list, but the wingers and right-back are considered more pressing requirements. Player sales or market opportunities could result in a centre-half and midfielder arriving later in the window, however.

[📰] NEW: Standards have slipped and must now be restored by Iraola, who favours hard work and frequently had the Bournemouth players messaging their WhatsApp group about not having any days off.

“Squad depth is an issue and may become more important if the return to a high-octane playing style begins to impact on fitness. Slot wanted a small pool of players but still seemed reluctant to utilise certain members of the squad, which raised questions as to why they were still at the club. Federico Chiesa is a prime example, although the Italian is the last Liverpool substitute to score a goal — against Qarabag in the Champions League in January. More contributions from more players will be required moving forward.”
[📰] Areas that Andoni Iraola needs to urgently address in the coming weeks:
• Fix disconnect with the Anfield crowd
• Get the best out of Wirtz and Isak
• First impressions count
• Shape squad building
• Assert authority and reset standards

Andoni Iraola on this day for him:
“I think it’s a day, for me… that is not only for me. I think you are what has been your life, what have been your influences. I’m coming from a very small town, working class, outside of San Sebastian. I’ve had my journey to become a football player. I’ve had my [coaching] journey, starting in Cyprus, going through the divisions, promotions, arriving, then La Liga, then the Premier League… and now we are here and a lot of people have helped you during this process, and every time I receive a message, I think you have to remember all those people that helped you, that have influenced you, and I am motivated to show all these people that ‘we have made it together and we enjoy it also’…”
Andoni Iraola’s message to Liverpool fans:
“I cannot ask them for a lot. I know how they are. I can only say that I want to become one more of you. I want to earn the right to be one of you, so we can enjoy all together.”
🚨 Andoni Iraola on his style of play:
“I think I have an advantage that I’ve been here already three years in the Premier League, and people for sure have seen Bournemouth play. There are some things that obviously WE NEED TO CHANGE, coaching Liverpool, but I wouldn’t like to lose our identity: the intensity, the aggressiveness, the organisation. Certain things that I wouldn’t like always to have in my team. Obviously, you have to adapt to the players you have, and it’s not the same at one club or the other, but there are fundamentals that I also think match quite well what has been Liverpool during a lot of years, and I think we can make it work.”
Andoni Iraola:
“The senior players that have played in the World Cup, they have been feeling the pressure, they have been playing for their countries… I think they need and deserve a rest, and also this allows us to give important minutes to train more clearly with the young players…”
Andoni Iraola:
“I want to get ready. Also with the World Cup being there, we will have a chance to work with especially with some of the young players, because a lot of senior players are out and arriving later because of the World Cup. I think it gives us the chance to know better the players from the Academy, some of the players that have been on loan, they will be important for the first part of pre-season, the American tour. I think it works very well for us, it gives us a lot of information before we take really decisions, before we start the season.”
Andoni Iraola on Richard Hughes:
“Obviously it helps a lot. On the other side of the table there is someone who you have already worked with. We were one year together. In this case, I would say it’s about the club, it’s about Liverpool. That’s what really attracted me. I’m really looking forward to getting all the information. I’m talking to everyone so I can understand better the club, everything that happens outside the pitch, and we still have time. We still have one month to until we really start working with the players, but I would like to use this month also properly to arrive here in the proper way.”
Andoni Iraola on the footballing side of the club:
“You don’t need a lot of things to get attracted by Liverpool. Liverpool is Liverpool. But obviously the atmosphere, the supporters, the club, the players… the chance for me to coach top level players, the chance to fight for titles. I think it cannot be more attractive than this. I’m really excited to start.”
Andoni Iraola:
“Football, at the end, is about emotion. Emotion, and I understand it’s also a privilege, but also a big responsibility, because all those people want to be represented properly, and we are here for this. And I would love from my side, from the players’ side, all those people to identify also with the football, identify with the values of the squad, and we are all-in for this!”
Andoni Iraola:
“Really excited, really excited because obviously you know about Liverpool, it’s a massive club. One of the biggest in the world, but the feeling side, and understanding a little bit more of this club. I always thought it was a special club, not just the football side but also because it’s what people think about, even during the week, how they are passionate about the club, and everyone, the ones who like football… I have some experience with The Athletic club, that I could in some ways familiarise. It’s going to be fun to experience it from the inside.”
