Oddsmakers handicap the US as the second best of its 4-team World Cup group, and Iran as the third best in its group. Should they both finish second in their respective groups, the US would play Iran in a playoff game July 3rd in Dallas.
Every new report on the consequences of Trump’s dismantling of USAID is more horrifying than the last. One model estimates it's caused 600K deaths — two-thirds of them children.
We can’t give Trump a blank check to keep destroying life-saving programs. https://t.co/AcD5MzJ3PF
GUYS I AM BEGGING YOU TO STOP RUINING GREAT SHOWS BY GETTING OBSESSED WITH FAN THEORIES AND TREATING EVERY DETAIL AS AN EASTER EGG. You'll just be disappointed when the finale comes and your intricate theory is wrong. Just sit back and watch how Reacher completes the mission.
@Marinelayer hey guys, loved my Bose Cord Sherpa Trucker until a needle, embedded in the sleeve, has stuck me pretty bad, drawing blood even. I can't seem to remove it, at least without cutting. please help
I’ve been very critical of the American healthcare system but have zero animosity towards any individual within it who follows the law. Rules and incentives determine outcomes, not individuals. Violence against execs for acting withing the system is horrific and never justified.
I saw a tweet this morning that was like “I’m gonna need everybody to stop assuming the assassin was a he” and I can’t stop thinking about it. Pure gold. The last glass ceiling!
This also highlights the huge difference between the "LGB" and the "T''. The gay rights movement just asked society to leave them alone and let them get married. No impositions on my life. The trans movement demands that I adopt their new dialect (or I'm a bigot) and allow males to play in girls sports (or I'm a bigot). Big impositions.
Bill Clinton On the Palestinians:
“And the only time Yasser Arafat didn't tell me the truth was when he promised me he was gonna accept the peace deal that we had worked out, which would have given the Palestinians a state on 96% of the West Bank and 4% of Israel, and they got to choose where the 4% of Israel was. So they would have the effect of the same land of all the West Bank. They would have a capital in East Jerusalem.
I can hardly talk about this…. And they would have equal access all day every day to the security towers that Israel maintained all through the West Bank up to the Golan Heights.
All this was offered, including, I will say it again, a capital in East Jerusalem and 2 of the 4 quadrants of the old city of Jerusalem, confirmed by the Israeli prime minister, Ehud Barak, and his cabinet. And they said no.
And I think part of it is that Hamas did not care about a homeland for the Palestinians. They wanted to kill Israelis and make Israel uninhabitable.
Well, I got news for them, they were there first before there was their faith existed.
They were there. In the time of King David, in the southern most tribes, Hadjardia and Samaria.”
I get very frustrated when the criminal justice reform community, to which I subscribe, blames every police altercation on officers regardless of the situation. Spurious complaints drown out legitimate criticisms of actual misconduct. Here's an example:
Last week in NYC, a man jumped a subway turnstile right in front of 2 officers. The police don't arrest or ticket him, but escort him out. He returns almost immediately and does the same thing. The officers notice he's carrying a knife. They follow, calling on him to drop the weapon. He doesn’t, saying they'll have to shoot him. He boards a subway, waving the knife near passengers. Still refusing to drop it, police taze him unsuccessfully. He leaves the train and officers follow. He lunges at an officer with a knife. The officer jumps back. The video gets unclear but both officers shoot at the suspect. Tragically, 4 people were hit: the suspect, an officer, and two bystanders.
Mother Jones published an article entitled, "The Tragic Inevitability of Overpolicing New York’s Subways," in which they assign the catalyst for the shooting as evading a $2.90 fare. The catalyst wasn't fare evasion; the catalyst was a troubled man threatening innocent civilians and attempting to assault an officer. Could officers have handled it better so 4 people weren't shot? Almost certainly. Is the fact that this episode happened a fault of law enforcement and the mayor for overpolicing the subways as the writer claims? No.
The assumption here is that jumping turnstiles (an issue recently prioritize by NYC given $600 million annual loss from fare evasion) or carrying deadly weapons in the subway system should not be enforced. We've already had this debate in 2020-2021. Then, mayors and police in some cities, including NYC, scaled back enforcement of many laws. Communities from NYC to Seattle to SF hated the results. People were scared to ride the subways due to the crime and cleanliness. They created a doom loop of fewer riders -> less revenue -> less safe -> fewer riders. Something had to change, otherwise cities themselves risked falling into the doom loop.
Save the criticism for when it's warranted. We do need to make policing safer for everyone: citizens, suspects, and officers. But the automatic reflex to blame police for everything is highly counterproductive for the CJ reform community.
In 1972, the large gender gap in college outcomes spurred Congress to pass Title IX, which banned sex-based discrimination in higher ed. Then, men held a 14% advantage in college enrollment.
Today, women hold an 18% advantage. This gap also demands attention.

Regardless of how asked, a large majority of people say their lives today are pretty good but that everyone else is doing terribly and the future is going to suck. Why are we so pessimistic?
"Israel and the Palestinians have both just suffered shattering defeats. Maybe in the next few years they will do some difficult rethinking, and a new vision of the future will come into view. But that can happen only after Hamas is fully defeated as a military and governing force."
Very thoughtful and fair analysis of the war by @nytdavidbrooks

Here's a cursed image: a receipt for an item bought nine minutes AFTER the first plane hit the North tower on 9/11, from a shop in that very same tower. Journalist Joanne Lipman grabbed a couple of refrigerator magnets for her daughter then there was a commotion outside...
