My dad used to wake up at 4:30 am every morning to drive a danfo bus across Lagos.
One rainy morning when I was 11, I begged him to stay home because the roads were flooded. He smiled, rubbed my head, and said:
“If I don’t work today, somebody in this house won’t eat tomorrow.”
That same night, he came home completely soaked, exhausted, and shivering. I remember pretending to be asleep while he quietly counted crumpled naira notes on the floor beside my mother.
After counting everything, he laughed.
Not because it was enough. Because it was just enough.
Years later, after I got my first salary, I handed him an envelope with money inside.
He opened it, looked at me for a few seconds, then started crying.
Not loud tears. Just the kind a man has been holding in for 20 years.
Then he said:
“YOU WERE THE REASON I NEVER GAVE UP.”
That moment changed the way I see parents forever.
Sometimes the people carrying the heaviest burdens are the ones acting like everything is okay.
Have you had any such experiences or you knew about one? Kindly share with us..🙏🏽
