Today I heard one of the worst engineering takes to exist.
“Documentation shouldn’t be necessary if the engineers are competent in what they’re doing.”
No. Documentation is for future you, for new teammates, and for anyone who can’t memorize everything they ever do.

Managers, q's to ask when employee is struggling...
- How have you felt about own performance lately?
- Are expectations (e.g., goals, quality) clear?
- Do you have tools, resources, info to do job well?
- What part of work do you feel stuck?
- What's irked you re: my mgmt style?
Vision is not mission. Vision is not values. Vision is not purpose.
Vision is destination – a picture of a better place.
Sure, mission (what), values (how), purpose (why) matter – but it’s vision (where) that propels us forward, unites team, is the true material of motivation.
Giving feedback is a conversation, not a mandate. Your feedback is fallible, an interpretation of what you think could be better, and you want the other person to riff on it with you.
It's "This is what I think, what do you think?"... Not "This is what is..."

“You can drop a mouse down a thousand-yard mine shaft; and, on arriving at the bottom, it gets a slight shock and walks away, provided that the ground is fairly soft. A rat is killed, a man is broken, a horse splashes.”
