we just wrapped our Spring quarter at @diabrowser. before i jump to the next big thing (!), a short behind-the-scenes on one of my favorite projects to date: artifacts!
the design challenge: how do you make AI-generated docs that don’t *feel* AI-generated? (🧵 1/10)
People think design is about how it looks.
It’s really about a deep and fundamental commitment to replying to your Slacks, Figma comments, Linear comments, emails, hopping on a quick call then doing all that one more time whoops times up see you at the craft factory tomorrow
@hobdaydesign Flat or not, the interface Clear used was incredibly pleasant to use. I haven't been loyal to a todo list app since.
With you re: nostalgia for Path and Rdio :)
@scspeier We have been working like this for ~1 year.
Productivity increase is real, but the change to design reviews is what makes it a winner. A PM, a CS rep, or an Engineer walks through the flow trying to accomplish the JTBD and talks through their feedback live.
@dotmariusz ikr
My current best guess is mixing sales methodologies w/ little exposure to actual pains (no dogfooding?) will do that.
Anecdotal but for me it’s kinda like working with a design recruiter who’s an ex-designer – initial search and selection goes way smoother.
Design doesn’t need reclaiming - you do. Igor @kochajkiewicz challenges designers to zoom out and see the bigger picture.

@hobdaydesign "squint and see" is a legit approach to getting the optical layout right.
"flip it upside down" is a good one for typography-heavy pieces, too.
A great fun example of how science works:
Observe a thing
Hypothesize about a thing
Test the hypothesis
Synthesize data and say if the hypothesis was right
Hypothesize some more
Test some more
Synthesize some more
Get your friends involved
Make jokes

Here's something (controversial?) that seems obvious to me now, but took me a while to realize:
The vast majority of early-stage, pre-product/market-fit startups do not need 40h/week of product design output, and often benefit from having less.
