27 political prisoners are currently on hunger strike in Togo.
Their detention conditions and treatment are cruel. They are as many as one hundred and thirty people staying in a cell of 4x6 meters. They are so tightly squeezed that they have to take turns to sleep while others stand.
They are denied access to a fair trial and some have spent more than eight years in prison, losing more than half of their body weight. Their crime? They were suspected of either participating in a protest against dictator @FEGnassingbe or criticizing the regime on social media or simply donating money to the protest movement.
Reading through the testimonials of some of these prisoners is heavy and disturbing. It sets you into depression. The torture they are subjugated to includes beatings every morning that prison guards call morning coffee. They are denied the right to use toilets for days. They are refused the right to take a shower for weeks. Both male and female detainees are raped. Some have permanently lost mobility after the torture and inhumane treatments. It is disturbing, disorienting, and paralyzing.
Many of these prisoners are parents to very young children. Dora was arrested and detained with her six month old baby who was still breastfeeding. After two weeks in the cell with her baby, a neighbor took the child because her other two kids were too young to care for their little sister.
There is also Grace, a midwife and mother of five. She was raped, then kicked in her belly several times by female prison guards who claimed they were taking revenge on her for all the women that midwives maltreat during labor. Her only crime was to call for change.
What is happening in my country #Togo under the French and Israeli backed regime of the Gnassingbe family is beyond horror. It is so heavy that one loses the ability to feel, to think, and sometimes to act from the outside.

Aziz Goma , a political prisoner in #Togo, begins a hunger strike after 8 years of arbitrary detention by dictator @FEGnassingbe
After eight years of arbitrary detention in inhumane conditions, 56-year-old Aziz Goma, has begun a hunger strike in Togo. His health is already in a critical state; he has lost the use of his legs about 4 years ago, suffered serious medical complications, and has been the victim of extortion by prison guards who demand money before granting him even minimal access to care.
Aziz’s only “crime” was giving 50,000 FCFA (about 80 dollars) to help young protesters from out of town to find accommodation during the protests in Lomé in 2017. For this act of solidarity, he was arrested, tortured, and denied justice for eight long years. On February 3, 2025, dictator Faure Gnassingbé’s regime sentenced him to ten years in prison at the end of a sham trial that violated every principle of fairness and law.
Aziz has endured unspeakable humiliations: used as a hostage by greedy guards, denied legal aid, and abandoned to conditions that at times made him no longer want to live. And yet, in his fragility, he has chosen courage. By starting this hunger strike, Aziz is demanding not only his own release but also that of all political prisoners in Togo, many of whom have been forgotten or have lost their lives behind bars.
Aziz’s hunger strike is an act of bravery and a cry of solidarity. We must raise our voices to force the regime of Faure Gnassingbé to put an end to this cruelty. Aziz must not die in prison!
Let us mobilize and demand the immediate release of Aziz Goma and all political prisoners in Togo. Enough of this cruelty from Faure Gnassingbé.

When dictator @FEGnassingbe seized power through a coup in 2005, Togo’s population was 5 million. Twenty years later, it has doubled to 10 million yet he has not built a single university in the past 20 years. He did not build a single public hospital. Not a single library. Not a single stadium. Not a single museum. Not even an arts or cultural center.
Today, there is only one functional MRI machine for the entire population of 10 million. The entire country has just two public dialysis centers. Public hospitals are so overcrowded, patients sleep on the floor, and children are placed three or four to a single bed.
Doctors are forced to perform surgeries using the light from their cellphones because there is no electricity in public hospitals. They even prescribe sachet water for patients to wash their hands before and after surgery.
Yet, Faure Gnassingbé spent over $35 million to build himself a new presidential palace because the $14 million palace his father built with public money was not “modern” enough for him.
This 58 years of kleptocratic reign has taken everything from us the people of #Togo.

Dictator @FEGnassingbe has gotten so confident in his abuse that he pushed the button further with the masses by completely wiping presidential elections from our constitution without a referendum. The arrogance with which tyrants rule their people by underestimating the power of the people is what eventually lead to their downfall
As the #Togolese saying goes: “The man lying on the ground no longer fears falling.”
After 60 years of tyranny, poverty, and dehumanization under this dynastic regime, the people of #Togo are already on the ground. And now, nothing( not fear, not force, not propaganda) can stop them from rising
