As a political organisation battling a credibility crisis, the African National Congress continues to behave as though reputational damage is a peripheral issue rather than an existential one.

It is difficult to understand why the party does not adopt a clean, non-negotiable rule that states any member credibly implicated in wrongdoing gets removed immediately with no debate, no delays and is only reinstated once formally cleared. This should not be seen as punishment or an infringement of someone’s rights , but as a basic act of institutional self-respect. I’m aware of the ‘step-aside’ rule that currently exists but seldom enforced.

Take the so-called “Chinese car minder” saga around the Women’s League President. The clumsy optics alone should have triggered an immediate leave of absence. Instead the party is quiet and it is business as usual for the lady save for parliament that has since instituted an investigation on the salary being shared in half with the said Ministers daughter who is also alleged to have been a babysitter of one of the two Chinese cars.

The ANC appears more concerned with internal sensitivities than with the message it sends to the public that is already fatigued by political scandals.

Then you have the case of Senzo Mchunu; it took nearly a month to relieve him of official duties, and even then, the separation is partial. He remains active within party structures while under a gigantic cloud. One is left asking; what exactly is the threshold for decisive action?

This is where the ANC continues to misread the room. South Africans are not demanding perfection; they are demanding consequence management . A visible, consistent standard that says: the country comes before the organisation and its individuals.

There have been more than enough opportunities for the party to begin restoring trust and redeem itself. All it takes are simple procedural interventions that require no grand policy conference, no ideological overhaul. Just discipline. Just a willingness to act swiftly when the integrity of the institution is at stake.
