It's been a bit, but wanted to share some memories from @rAgeExpo and the @IncConnection All Star Gaming Rocket League finals! Super appreciate anyone that I met and talked to, the whole experience was awesome 😃
Most calls to end Gulf state presence into Western cultural institutions avoid the geopolitical reality:
The Gulf monarchies exist only due to Western governments' investment and protection. 'Human rights' and 'democracy' don't matter.
Applies to esports also.
Placing capital into Western instruments/entities is how the Emerati royals pay their protection. This quid pro quo is the foundation of the petrodollar.
'Sportswashing' is a factor but cultural institutions are a minority of Gulf state Western investments.
The lad unintentionally explained the exact mechanism of how sportswashing works😀
The core strategy of sportswashing isn't to buy a club and run it poorly or purely for ego. The strategy is for a state linked actor to use vast wealth to do a boss job of running a club and uplifting the surrounding community. By supporting thousands of jobs, building world class venues, and delivering relentless sporting success, the ownership successfully purchases the fierce, unshakeable loyalty of the fanbase and the local government.
Once that deep goodwill is established, it acts as a powerful geopolitical shield. When international observers criticise the UAE's human rights record, or when the Premier League investigates the club's financial practices, the ownership barely needs to defend itself. An entire army of fans and local stakeholders will step up to defend them, because their daily lives have genuinely been improved by the state's money. The "washing" is successful precisely because the local investment is so undeniably good.

@0ivvn@Virge He who condemns a master for a single hour of clumsiness is like the man who curses the sun for one passing eclipse; the darkness is brief, and only the ungrateful mistake it for the end of light
@BassFromThePast However, the entire industry is acting like this money will keep flowing in forever. It feels like there were 0 lessons learnt from the collapse of VC funding, the PIF just filled in the hole the VCs left.
Onto Esports Winter 2 I guess
@BassFromThePast Profit was never the goal, influence was. It was fairly successful in esports, if oftentimes gratuitous.
The gravy train was always going to run dry eventually but the main culprit is definitely the current geopolitical situation forcing the suits to derisk and reevaluate.
As our player base grows so will our talent pool of casters, content creators, broadcasters.
It was such a pleasure being with these guys and seeing what they brought to the broadcast.
Honoured to have been part of the group stage broadcast for the RLCS 2v2 SSA Open on @GreyBeardGG's channel!
Shoutout to my codebutantes Sonnar and FoxasurusRex (what a name btw)
@T3Bates The best solution imo is high contrast design and having consistent elements to keep perceived weight similar across designs.
Otherwise, changing the ball design is a good thing. High-level players need to get over placebo - this will only happen if visuals are changed frequently
@T3Bates Quick and dirty mockup - the jacket gives it weight and contrast while leaving the design highly visible. It also aids in reading the spin of the ball, which affects bounces and movement on the ground.
