Most people have no idea how cognitive dissonance works, how bad it's infected a majority of people in recent years, or how severely it can distort reality

Even more often than intentionally misunderstanding, people with severe cognitive dissonance, quite literally, cannot even SEE potentially invalidating information if they tried to

Anyone being honest with themselves will immediately look back on a moment in their lives in which this happened

They were "blind" to a truth, and once they opened their eyes, they looked back and thought, "How the hell did I miss that???"

Here's how it works:

The first thing to understand is that cognitive dissonance is, in fact, a survival instinct

Your mind will not tolerate extreme, or total losses of perceived control if it can help it, including cognitive control (understanding of your reality)

And that's exactly what it tries to do when it senses the threat of this level of loss of control

It literally "reframes" reality such that you can tolerate it

Your mind and body, with or without your knowledge, will do what they feel they need to do to survive

When you invest too much of yourself into a belief, then the idea of letting that belief die in the face of invalidating information, to your mind and body, feels just like letting YOURSELF die

Your body will not allow this

And so it does everything it can to paint a reality that validates what it thinks you need to believe in order to survive

This is why you can show two people the exact same video, for instance, and they can both come away with WILDLY different interpretations of it

No matter how clear and indisputable the video was

The view they have of it will ALWAYS be the view that their minds/bodies feel they need to have of it; the view that represents what they value most, in that moment

A person seeking the truth at all costs will see the video for what it is, because that's what they value

A person seeking to survive will see what they need to see to survive, because survival is ALWAYS the ultimate value in people who sense they are in grave danger

Why are people so unbelievably cognitively dissonant nowadays?

Answer:

Because a rise in cognitive dissonance perfectly correlates with a rise in emotionally derived beliefs

If you attach politics and/or religion to everything (food, sports, academia, music, science, movies, etc.), than anything they touch necessarily evokes heightened emotionality in people

People reliably over identify with political and religious beliefs because of the level of importance they tend to carry

Over identifying with beliefs means, as described earlier in this post, that you become your beliefs on some level
