I’ve stumbled upon the crux of the issue in education…
An additive mindset.
We’re not having the tough conversations about what we need to STOP doing. Instead, we just keep doing all the things that are no longer working, while also trying to adopt all the better practices.
@evansines7 @LHSCoachConn Thanks so much! It helps to have some awesome kids to work with too! I am so proud of you and I’m bummed your season and final months of senior year have been disrupted. No matter what I know you’re gonna do great things and keep making us all proud.
@DrKoestler I used this earlier this year with my 8th graders and they were able to come up with an argument for each. I love this activity because I am always surprised by new perspectives!
Districts, please focus more on supporting teachers than focusing on new programs & tech. While those are important,When teachers feel like they’re expected to sacrifice family, time, health, & sometimes dignity, it creates a culture where they fight to survive instead of thrive!
I often wonder if the admin who addresses the whole staff for the issue of one person was a teacher who punished the whole class instead of addressing one student specifically?
Admin, in 2020, focus on connecting with your staff and raising the morale of the school. When you’re one of the reasons teachers love their job, you will have a committed team.
When school districts ask teachers to add something to their already full plates, it’s important to have a valid reason. Using verbiage like it’s what you signed up for, it’s all about the kids, it’s just how it is, etc., are not valid reasons.
School culture is a reflection of the consistent habits within a school. Admin, are you in the habit of supporting, encouraging, empowering & appreciating your staff? Teachers/ staff ar you in the habit of supporting & encouraging each other? Good habits create great culture.
Why do we always set some unrealistic expectation for all teachers to be great? Yes, we can all improve, but is there another profession that has this expectation or an obsession in measuring it. Teachers are great based on their unique talents, not some generic eval. Same w/ S's
Bullying shouldn’t be part of leadership. Thankfully many aren’t like this. Here are some of the signs of a bully leader:
* lack transparency
* use title/ position as power
* tell instead of ask
* demeaning/disrespectful
* lack empathy
* refuse feedback/ input
* favors yes people
