If you have ADHD, you must consume a protein-dense breakfast.
Eating pure carbohydrates without protein triggers an insulin response that clears competing amino acids from your bloodstream except for tryptophan.
When you consume pure carbohydrates, it triggers a rapid spike in blood glucose.
In response, your pancreas secretes a surge of insulin to clear the sugar from your bloodstream.
Normally, tryptophan has to compete with other LNAAs like tyrosine, leucine, and valine to cross the blood-brain barrier via shared transport proteins.
Insulin signals your skeletal muscles to absorb those competing amino acids, effectively clearing them out of the blood.
However, insulin does not clear tryptophan.
So with its competitors gone, tryptophan has an open, uncontested pathway to cross into the brain, where it is quickly synthesized into serotonin.
Given that the core pathophysiology of ADHD involves a baseline deficiency or dysregulation in dopamine and norepinephrine pathways, particularly in the prefrontal cortex, consuming only carbs will sooner or later leave you even more irritable, unable to focus etc.
Point being: You can have some carbs. But do not forget to get your protein.
