I was really in the mood for Ugie Ẹbọ yesterday when I shared this track on my WhatsApp status. The beat dey put person in the Ẹbọ mood.😊

Like I partly mentioned about paying attention to Ẹdo language yesterday, I learnt a few things from this song and was able to dissect some everyday words that sparked questions of historical origin and meaning. One of them was the word “Ukegbe” which this song taught me to have originated from the phrase “Uke N’i Gbe Vbẹ Udo”. I had to start asking questions.

What exactly is going on in the Nigerian community in the UK with some of our men.

We currently have a few Nigerian men charged with raping a minor and awaiting trial.

We have another Nigerian man charged with raping a minor, remanded in prison until the next court date.

Nigerian men in the UK, what is the issue with some of our fellow men?

This is not about generalising or attacking all Nigerian men, but these are serious and repeated issues that cannot be ignored.

We need to start asking hard questions, holding each other accountable, and addressing whatever is going wrong within certain spaces of our community.

Silence or defensiveness will not fix this.

We have to do better.

I spent about 1 hour on Temu this morning.
